Compared with the workstation system, the server has been greatly improved in stability and security due to more kernel optimization. However, many people do not need the full functionality of the server, and the server system shuts down the services required by some workstation systems, we will make some introductions on how to optimize Windows Server 2003 and transform it into a workstation system.
1. Disable the Configure Server Wizard

Since there is no need for server provisioning, first we disable the "Configure Your Server" (Manage Your Server) wizard, and you can-> Administrator tool (Administrative Tools) in Control Panel- > Manage Your server (Manage Your server) to run it, and then in the lower left corner of the window check "Do not show this page when you log in" (Don t display this pages at logon).

2, the establishment of a new user account

Windows Server 2003 does not support the login Welcome screen similar to Windows XP. You can create a new user account with your personality when you first enter the system.

Open start-> run-> type "Lusrmgr.msc", and you will see Local Users and groups (locals and Groups).

Right-click Users on the left window and select New user. Enter the account information in the dialog box that pops up and click "Build" (great). So your account is available, of course, you can choose to add your account to the Administrators group, right click on your new user. Then select Properties-> Click "Affiliate to" on Member of Tab-> "Add" ... -> "Advanced" Advanced-> "now look for" find today.

Double-click Administrators in the Find Results dialog box and close Local Users and groups after you click OK for two times (OK), Now you will be able to log off the administrator user to login to the system with your own account.

3. Disable Internet Explorer enhanced security

The IE security plugin that appears as a new Windows Component--internet Explorer Enhanced security defaults to set your IE safety to the highest. This way you will be in the Access Site pop-up query box and for you to browse the Web and file download to prevent the behavior. We don't really need this component.

We first prohibit the appearance of the query box, and in the dialog box that pops up, check "don't display this information in the future" (in the future.

Then, we can customize the security level of IE in the IE tool option. Pull the scroll bar on the Security tab to set the Internet zone security to "medium" (Medium), a level that will suit most people, and if you have a particular request, this step will not suit you.

By setting the security for IE, you can now install Sun ' s Java vm!

Of course, you can even uninstall Internet Explorer enhanced security in the Control Panel-Add programs-to add or remove Windows components.

4. Install Java VM

Windows Server 2003 does not have an integrated MS Java VM or a Sun Java VM, and you can download and install it yourself.

5. Disable Shutdown Event tracking

Shutdown Event Tracking (Shutdown event Tracker) is also a setup that differs from other workstation systems in Windows Server 2003, which is a necessary choice for the server, but it is not useful for workstation systems and we can also ban it.

Open "Start" Start-> "Run" runs run-> enter "Gpedit.msc", in the left portion of the window that appears, select Computer Configuration (Computer Configuration)-> "Administrative Templates" (Administrative Templates)-> "System" and double-click "Shutdown Event Tracker" in the right window.

In the dialog box that appears, select Disabled, click and OK to save and exit.

In this way, you will see a shutdown window similar to Windows 2000

6. Enable Hardware and DirectX acceleration

Hardware acceleration: Desktop Right-click-Property (properties)-> settings (Settings)-Advanced (Advanced)-Troubleshooting (Troubleshoot). Pull the hardware acceleration scroll bar of the page to full, preferably click OK to save the exit. This may be a moment of black screen is completely normal.

DirectX acceleration: Open start-> "Run", type "DxDiag" and enter "DirectX Diagnostics Tool" (DirectX tools), on the Display page, click DirectDraw , Direct3D and AGP texture accelerates three buttons to enable acceleration.

7. Allow Sound acceleration

If you are using the Windows Server 2003 Standard version, take the second step, because the standard version already allows the sound service.

Open start-> Run, type "services.msc", locate "Windows Audio" in the window that appears, and double-click it, and then select Auto in the Drop-down menu in startup mode (startup type) (Automatic) and click "Apply" (apply)-> "Start" (start)-> "OK" (OK)

Open start-> Run, type "DxDiag" and enter the DirectX Diagnostics Tool (DirectX Tools), and on the "Sound" page, "Hardware acceleration level for sound" The scroll bar (Hardware Sound acceleration level) is pulled to full speed acceleration.

8. Enable Desktop Themes

If you're tired of Windows classic desktop, you might want to consider enabling desktop themes, which Windows Server 2003 turns off by default.

Open start-> Run, type "services.msc", locate the Themes service in the window that appears, double-click it, and then select Automatic (Automatic) in the Drop-down menu in startup mode (startup type) and click "Apply" to-> "Start" (start)-> "OK".

Such an operation would only allow you to use Windows with the Luna theme of the three models, if you want to use more Third-party theme files, you need to use the modified Uxtheme.dll file to support it, about the modified Uxtheme.dll file, you can http:/ /vortex.winbeta.org/find more.

Note: As to how to replace the Uxtheme.dll problem, this site has n times the answer, need to know friends please check the previous posts.

9, allow the built-in IMAPI cd-burning service and support Windows Imaging Equipment Services

If you want to enable Windows built-in IMAPI cd-burning service. Do the following:

Open start-> Run, type "services.msc", locate the "IMAPI cd-burning COM Service" in the window that appears, and double-click it, and then in startup mode (startup Type) and click "Apply" to-> "Start" (start)-> "OK" by clicking on the Drop-down menu (Automatic).

If you have a video device like a digital camera or scanner, you should turn on the Windows Image Acquisition service.

Open start-> Run, type "services.msc", locate "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" In the window that appears, and double-click it, and then in startup mode (startup Type), select "Automatic" (Automatic) and click Apply-> "Start" (start)-> "OK"

10, Advanced settings

We can modify some of the advanced settings for Windows Server 2003 to fit the workstation's application environment.

Right-click on "My Computer" (my Computer)--Attributes (properties)--Advanced (Advanced)--Performance (performance)--Settings (Setting)--Advanced (Advanced), "Processor planning" (Processor scheduling) and memory usage (Memory usage) are assigned to Programs (PROGRAMS) for use. Then click "OK" (OK.)

disabling error Reporting

Right-click on "My Computer" (my Computer)--Attributes (properties)--Advanced (Advanced)--click on the "Error Report" (Reporting) button, in the window that appears to "Disable error Reporting" (Disable error Reporting) Select and check "but notify me when an error occurs" (But, notify me when critical errors occur.)

Adjusting virtual memory

The virtual memory required to run Windows normally is a "backup force" of physical memory, although the drive is not as fast as memory, but the memory on the capacity is not comparable to the hard disk. So we always think that the bigger the virtual memory, the better, in fact, is not the case, especially when installing Windows Server 2003 as a workstation environment does not bear the high workload, we can try to disable virtual memory. The premise is that you must have more than 512M of physical memory. Many friends worry that if disabling virtual memory does not cause the system to stand up and hibernate as it would in a Windows 9x environment, this will not happen because Windows XP began its virtual memory (ie Pagefile.sys) is dedicated to data exchange, Standby mode while the data remain in physical memory, Hibernate mode also has its own dedicated hibernation file (Hiberfil.sys), so the system will never hibernate problems. While some friends who use Windows Server 2003 often feel overwhelmed by their shutdown and logoff slowness, my personal solution is to disable virtual memory so that your logoff and shutdown times may be much faster. I did a test today, and when I loaded virtual memory, it was 3 seconds to log off the user and the shutdown was 23 seconds. However, when the virtual memory is disabled, the time to log off the login is reduced to 2 seconds, while the shutdown time is shortened to 3 seconds.

Right-click "My Computer" (my Computer)--Attributes (properties)--Advanced (Advanced)--Performance (performance)--Settings (Setting)--Advanced (Advanced), click "Virtual Memory" (Virtual memory) section of change, and then select No paging file in the window that appears. Reboot the system.

Note: It is not a problem to adjust the virtual memory section for personal testing, but it is not guaranteed on your machine, so I am not liable for any consequences of this setting. Just a friend who recommends complaining about the speed of Windows Server 2003 shutdown attempts.

11, Automatic Landing

Windows Server 2003 defaults to using the Ctrl-atl-del to Login dialog box to log on to Windows, but we can use the Windows XP tweak UI to automatically log on to Server 2003.

Download Tweak UI Software

Execute TweakUI.exe directly after downloading

In the left panel select logon-> autologon-> on the right tick log on automatically at system startup enter your username and domain (if not write)

Click the set Password below, enter the username password, and then click OK.

Although the same functionality can be done by modifying the registry, the method password that modifies the registry is clear in the registry, and the tweak UI does not leave a plaintext password in the registry, so it is recommended that the tweak UI be used to do the job.

12. Install DirectX 9a

Installing DirectX 9a on Windows Server 2003 and installing DirectX 9a on other versions of Windows is the same. Enable DirectX and Graphics acceleration before installation.

Download: DirectX 9.0a Websetup

Run the file to start the installation, Websetup.exe is just an installation wizard and will download approximately 6.9 MB files during the installation process.

The system needs to be restarted after the installation is complete.

13, hidden files

Windows Server 2003 displays all folders by default, and if you do not want to do so, you can hide them by a few ways:

Open any folder, select Tools-> Folder Options-> View, select Do not show hidden files and folders, click OK.

In Windows Server 2003, Windows Media Player 9 is already installed, click start-> Programs-> accessories-> Entertainment-> Window s Media player can open it.
