Insert Section Break

You can use a section break to change the layout or formatting of one or more pages in a document. For example, you can set part of a Single-column page to a two-column page. You can separate the chapters in a document so that the page numbering for each chapter starts at 1. You can also create a different header or footer for a section of a document.

Note: In Microsoft Office Word 2007, you can select a number of page layouts from the new page Design Gallery. For example, you can add a Single-column page that contains two columns of sections by clicking the appropriate page layout options in the new page Design Gallery.

Types of section breaks that can be inserted

Section breaks are used to implement layout or formatting changes in some documents. You can change the following format for a single section:

Page margins

Paper size or orientation

Vertical alignment of text on the page

Headers and footers Header and footer: A header can consist of text or a graphic that appears at the top of each page in a section. The footer appears at the bottom of each page. Headers and footers often include page numbers, chapter titles, dates, and author names. )

A section break controls the formatting of the text section that precedes it. Deleting a section break also deletes the formatting of the text section before the section break. The text of the paragraph becomes part of the following section and is formatted with that section. For example, if you separate the chapters of a document with a section break and then delete the section breaks at the beginning of the second chapter, the first and second chapters will be in the same section and take the form used in the previous chapter only.

Section breaks that control the formatting of the last part of the document are not displayed as part of the document. To change the document format, click in the last paragraph in the document.

The following example shows the type of section break that you can insert. (In each illustration, a double dashed line represents a section break.) )

The next Page command inserts a section break and starts a new section on the next page. This type of section break is especially useful for starting a new chapter in a document.

The continuous command inserts a section break and starts a new section on the same page. Continuous section Fu Yi is used to implement a format change on a page, such as changing the number of columns.

The even page or Odd Page command inserts a section break and starts a new section on the next even-numbered page or odd page. If you want the chapters of a document to always start on odd or even pages, use the odd-numbered page or even page section break option.

1. Click where you want to change the format.

You may want to insert a pair of section breaks before and after the portion of the selected document.

2. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Separator.

3. In the section break group, click the type of section break that corresponds to the type of formatting change that you want to make.

For example, if you want to separate a document into chapters, you might want each chapter to start with an odd page. Click Odd pages in the section break group.

Cancel document layout changes

Section breaks define where formatting changes in a document. Deleting a section break also deletes the formatting of the text section before the section break. The text of the paragraph becomes part of the following section and is formatted with that section.

Make sure you are in normal view so that you can see the double dashed section break.

1. Select the section break you want to delete.

2. Press Delete.
