Page numbers are associated with headers and footers, and you can add page numbers to the top, bottom, or margins of a document. Information saved in headers and footers or margins appears dimmed and cannot be changed with the document body information.
To change the header or footer or change the information in the page margins, do the following: Double-click the header or footer, and then under Header and footer tools.
I don't see any page number design in the Style Gallery
If you do not see any built-in header or footer designs in the gallery, the build block add-in may not be available. To ensure that the built-in design appears in all Microsoft Office Word 2007 building block Style galleries, do the following:
1. Click Office button, and then click Word Options.
2. Click Add-Ins.
3. In the Administration list, select Disable Project, and then click Search.
4. Click Build Block. dotx, and then click Enable.
5. Restart Word.
Insert Page number
You can choose from the various page numbering designs that are available in the Style gallery.
Insert a page number or "X page, Y page" page number
1. On the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Page Number.
2. Depending on where you want the page number to appear in the document, click Top of page, bottom of page, or margins.
3. Select the page numbering design from the design style gallery. The Style Gallery contains the "page X, Y pages" option.
Format Page Numbers
After you add a page number, you can change the page number as if you were changing the text in the header or footer. You can change the format, font, and size of the page number.
Modify the page number format, such as 1, I, or A
1. Double-click the header or footer of a page in your document.
2. Under Header and Footer tools, on the Design tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Page Number, and then click Format Page number.
3. In the page Number format box, click a numbering style, and then click OK.
Change the font and font size for page numbers
1. Double-click the header, footer, or margin of a page in the document.
2. Select the page number.
3. On the Mini toolbar shown above the selected page number, do one of the following:
To change the font, click the font name in the box

To make the font larger or smaller, do one of the following:
To make the font larger, click Increase Font or press ctrl+shift+>.
To make the font smaller, click Shrink font or press ctrl+shift+<.
Note: You can also specify the font size in the Font group on the Start tab.
Start or Restart numbering a page number
Do one of the following:
Start numbering page numbers with a different number
For example, if you add a cover page to a document with a page number, the original 1th page is automatically edited as page 2nd, but you might want the document to start on page 1th.
1. Click anywhere in the document.
2. On the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Page Number.
3. Click Set page number format.
4. In the Start Page number box, enter a page number.
Note: If you have a cover page and you want the first sheet of the document to start at 1, type 0 in the Start Page number box.
Renumber the page numbers for each chapter or section starting with 1
For example, you can edit the directory to I to IV, and the remainder to 1 to 25. If your document contains more than one chapter, you may need to renumber the page numbers in each chapter.

4. In the Start Page number box, enter 1.
Delete page numbers
Microsoft Office Word 2007 automatically deletes page numbers when you click Remove page numbers or manually delete page numbers for individual pages in a document.
1. On the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Page Number.

Note: If the first page number of the document is different, or if the header or footer of the odd or even page is different, or if there are unlinked sections, you must remove the page number from each of the different headers or footers.
