Remote Desktop Service (formerly known as "Terminal Service") is a server role in WindowsServer2008R2. It provides technologies that allow users to access various Windows programs installed on the Remote Desktop Session host RD Session host) server, or access the complete Windows desktop.

With the remote desktop service, you can access the RD Session host server from within the company network or the Internet. Remote Desktop service allows you to efficiently deploy and maintain software in an enterprise environment. You can easily deploy programs from a central location. Because the program is installed on the RD Session host server rather than the client computer, it is easier to upgrade and maintain the program. The remote desktop service accelerates and extends desktop and application deployment on any device. It helps protect the security of key intellectual property rights while improving staff efficiency and simplifying regulatory compliance. The remote desktop service enables both virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and task-based desktop, allowing users to work wherever they want.

The remote desktop service role in WindowsServer2012 provides technologies that enable users to connect to virtual desktops, remoteapps, and task-based desktops. With the remote desktop service, you can access remote connections from the enterprise network or the Internet.

I. Practical application:Remote Desktop service allows staff to work wherever they want. Some advantages of Remote Desktop in WindowsServer2012 include:

1,Unified management experience-Manage sessions and virtual desktop sets, configure RemoteApp Programs, manage virtual desktops, and add servers to deployments from a centralized console;

2,User Personalization-Your User Configuration File disk allows you to retain user personalized settings across session sets and pooled virtual desktop sets;

3,Low-price Storage-Pooled virtualization desktops can be migrated between host computers using local storage in real time. Personal virtualized desktops can use storage on network sharing;

4,Automated pooled virtual desktop management-Use a virtual desktop template to centrally deploy and manage pooled virtual desktops. Any changes such as application installation or security updates are installed on the virtual desktop template, and then the pooled virtual desktop is installed again from the virtual desktop template.

Ii. Server Manager Information:Remote Desktop is a server role composed of several role services. In WindowsServer2012, the following remote desktop service role services can be installed with this role:

1,RDVirtual Host:Remote desktop virtualization host RD virtualization host) Hyper-V can be integrated through RemoteApp and "Desktop Connection" to deploy the virtual machine collection pool or individual virtual machine collection within the Organization;

2,RDSession host:Remote Desktop Session host RD Session host) enables the server to host RemoteApp Programs or session-based computers. You can connect to the RD Session host server in the session set to run programs, save files, and use resources on these servers;

3,RDConnection Proxy:Remote Desktop Connection proxy RD connection proxy): A) allows users to reconnect to their existing virtual machines, remoteapps, and session-based desktops; B ): this allows you to evenly distribute loads between RD Session host servers in a session set or between pooled virtual desktops in a pooled virtual desktop set. C) Provides access permissions to virtual machines in a virtual machine set;

4,RDWebAccess:Remote Desktop Web Access (RDWeb access) allows users to access RemoteApp and desktop connections by running the "START" menu on Windows 8 and Windows 7 computers, or by using a Web browser. RemoteApp and "Desktop Connection" provide a custom view of RemoteApp Programs and session-based computers in the session set, as well as a custom view of RemoteApp Programs and virtual machines in the Virtual Machine Set;

5,RDAuthorization:Remote Desktop authorization RD authorization) manages the licenses required to connect to a remote desktop session computer server or virtual desktop. You can use RD authorization to install, issue, and track license availability;

6,RDGateway:Remote Desktop Gateway (RD gateway) allows authorized users to connect to virtual machines, remoteapps, and session-based computers in the enterprise's internal network from any device connected to the Internet.

III:New features in Remote Desktop Services:

1. Virtual Machine infrastructure (VDI) Deployment: the remote desktop service includes VDI deployment in WindowsServer2008R2. In WindowsServer2012, the remote desktop service includes a new way to efficiently configure and manage virtual machines. Some enhancements include:

1 ):Unified and centralized experience-Quickly deploy VDI, and then use the new unified and centralized Experience Management Sharing and individual virtual machine deployment;

2 ):Automatic and simple single image management-Use an Automatic Virtual Machine template to deploy and manage shared virtual machines;

3 ):User Personalization-Use the user configuration file disk to retain user personalized settings for shared virtual machine deployment

4 ):Low-cost storage-Use lower-cost local storage for real-time migration between master computers that share virtual machines. Individual virtual machines can use SMB center storage at a lower cost.

2. Session virtualization deployment: In WindowsServer2012, session virtualization deployment in the remote desktop service includes a new way to efficiently configure and manage session-based desktops. In earlier versions of Remote Desktop Services, the current management of RD Session host servers is executed at each server level. Supports centralized management and installation by using the session virtualization Deployment Solution. Session Virtualization in WindowsServer2012 provides the following benefits:

1)Unified and centralized experience-In WindowsServer2012, session virtualization can be quickly deployed and managed and deployed in a unified and centralized manner;

2 ):Simplified centralized deployment-Simple solution-based installation allows you to create an entire session set at a time;

3 ):User Personalization-The user configuration file disk allows you to retain the user personalized settings of the session set.

4 ):Centralized and unified management-Manage all RD Session host servers in the session set from a single location.

5 ):FairshareExperience-To implement predictable user experience in WindowsServer2012 and ensure that the user does not negatively affect the session performance of other users, the following functions are enabled on the RD Session host server by default: a)NetworkFairshare-Dynamically allocate available bandwidth between sessions based on the number of active sessions to support equal bandwidth utilization. B)DiskFairshare-By evenly allocating disk I/O among sessions, the disk is prevented from being overutilized by sessions. C)CPUFairshare-Dynamically allocates the processor time between sessions based on the number of active sessions and the load of these sessions. This is introduced in WindowsServer2008R2 and has been improved for heavy load in WindowsServer2012.

Session virtualization deployment includes RD Session host server and infrastructure server, such as RD authorization, RD connection proxy, RD gateway, and RDWeb access server.

3. centralized resource publishing: In WindowsServer2008R2, publishing and managing applications on shared and personal virtual machines are very time-consuming and costly. Since the RemoteApp program is only integrated with the Windows (R) experience of the local machine, this increases the management cost because the user does not organize the method for publishing the RemoteApp program. The remote desktop service in WindowsServer2012 allows you to publish and manage resources, such as RemoteApp Programs, session-based desktops, and virtual machines, from the centralized console. With this new release function, you can learn about the resources allocated to end users, change the published resources of any specified set, and edit the attributes of published resources. In addition to the centralized console, you can also configure RemoteApp and desktop connection URL using the Group Policy, so that users can automatically access the URL through the email address. Centralized resource publishing provides end users with an experience that can replace locally installed applications.

4. Remote Desktop Protocol RDP) rich user experience: WindowsServer2008R2ServicePack1 and Windows7ServicePack1 introduce Microsoft softremotefx, which supports providing a complete Windows user experience to many client services, including rich client, thin client, and ultra thin client. WindowsServer2012 is built on this platform, so it can provide a richer and more seamless experience on all types of networks and devices. In particular, Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) provides a consistent user experience even when you connect to a centralized workspace on a network with limited bandwidth and high latency.

These are the theories and terminologies of MicrosoftHyper-V's VDI infrastructure. I will elaborate on the implementation technical details in the VDI series.
