IBM plans to announce next Tuesday that it will use a higher-performance processor in the JS20 blade server and run the AIX operating system.

Tim, IBM head of BladeCenter strategy, said these changes mean that the JS20 blade servers will be more in terms of processing capabilities than the low-end Unix servers of IBM companies such as p610 and p615.

In the blade market, IBM's competitors include HP, Dell, and Sun. Tim said that IBM's first blade server uses Intel's chip, but JS20 uses the PowerPC 970 chip. The earliest version of The JS20 blade server uses a 1.6 GHz PowerPC 970 chip, while the new product uses a 2.2 GHz PowerPC 970 FX chip. Compared with the original model, the running speed of the software on the new product has increased by 50%. The starting price of the new system is $2699, which will be available in October 29.

At the launch, JS20 can only run Linux, but now it can also run AIX. this initiative by IBM will make the JS20 Blade Server more attractive to general enterprise users, not just to high-performance computing users. JS20 blade servers currently support AIX5.2. By the end of the year, it will also support AIX5.3. IBM will also use intel's 3.6 GHz Nocona Xeon chip in HS20 blade servers, the system was released on July 15, November 12 at a starting price of $2039.

In addition, IBM uses the new hard drive in its blade servers. Previously, the IBM blade server used the IDE hard disk, and now it is replaced with a SCSI hard disk with higher access speed and larger storage capacity. This will greatly improve the performance of blade servers when running some applications. IBM says the JS20 blade server will use the SCSI hard disk within one year.
