1. Upgrade Controller firmware

1.1 download Microcode

The Controller's Microcode includes two packages:

1.2 preparations before Upgrade:

1. Check whether the firmware you want to upgrade is compatible with the installed multipath!
2. Ensure that the system status is optimal.
3. Read the relevant readme files before upgrading to ensure compatibility
4. Both controllers must be online and accessible.
5. Save All Support Data Collection before the upgrade.

1.3 The following situations cannot be upgraded:
1. Unsupported controller type or different types of controller in the same storage system
2. failed drives
3. There are hotspare disks in use
4. array in incomplete
5. Some operations, such as defragmenting, drive firmware in downloading, or some other operations in progress
6. There are missing Luns in the storage
7. The controller is not in the optimal status.
8. The storage partitioning database is upt

11. storage subsystem does not respond. SM cannot communicate with storage subsystem.

1.4 upgrade order
1. Update the host's SM to ensure that the correct version of the multi-path software, Storage Manager, is installed.
2. Update ESM to the latest version, followed by controller firmware. Expired ESM firmware will make the expansion cabinet inaccessible after the controller firmware is upgraded. The ESM firmware required by each controller firmware is included in the readme file.
3. After updating controller firmware, the next step is NVSRAM. The two parts must be upgraded together or quickly upgraded in order.
4. Any power or network failure during the upgrade may cause configuration interruption. Therefore, the power off DS3500 or management console cannot be used during the upgrade process.

In short, the sequence is ESM firmware -- Drive -- Controller firmware-NVSRAM.

1.5 upgrade process

During the Upgrade process, right-click the place where Storage Manager manages the subsystems and "Upgrade Controller firmware" will appear. This is generally used for major version Upgrade, for example, Upgrade 6 to 7. Another way is to upgrade firmware of Controller/ESM/Drive in "Advanced" -- "Maintenance" -- "Download", which is generally used for minor version upgrade, such as 7. upgrade xx to 7.xx.

Firmware is transmitted to one of the controllers and then copied to another controller. Both controllers perform CRC verification on firmware image. If the verification is OK, firmware will be marked as ready and can be activated. If any controller Validation result is failed, both controllers will mark the firmware image as invalid and cannot be activated. An error is returned to the console.

During the activation, the first controller transfer all the Luns to another controller, and then reboot and activate the new firmware. Then it takes over the LUN, and it is the second controller upgrade. When both controllers are up, the LUN will be redirected to the preferred path again!

If transfer firmware image is not immediately activate, the normal controller reboot or power cycle will not activate the new firmware. It takes effect only when the user selects activate firmware.

1.6 Some Tips

1. During the upgrade, power down or network failure may cause configuration interruption. Therefore, do not disable the DS5000 storage system or management station during the upgrade process. If you use in-band management, there will be an FC hubs. Make sure that no device connected to SAN is powered up during the upgrade. Otherwise, loop initialization is triggered and the upgrade process is interrupted!

2. If you want to upgrade the Controller firmware from 6.xx. XX. XX to 7.50.13.00 or later, you must first upgrade it to 7.1x.xx.xx or 7.36.xx.xx.

3. To manage DS5000 with the firmware version of V7.6, the SM must be upgraded to V10.60. Therefore, you must upgrade the SM host software before executing the firmware upgrade. SM V10.60 can no longer manage the storage of CFW 5.x.

During the upgrade process, you must connect to two DS5000 controllers. You cannot connect only one controller to perform the microcode upgrade. Therefore, the two controllers must be either accessible through FC or Ethernet, and the two controllers must be in the optimal state.

Ii. Upgrade ESM firmware

Some new Drive codes must be supported by new ESM

In EXP5000, EXP520, EXP810 replace ESM, there is a firmware synchronization feature to ensure that the new ESM firmware is automatically synchronized with the existing firmware. This automatically solves the problem of firmware mismatch!

Iii. Upgrade Drive firmware

A maximum of four types of drive, irrelevant type, or different firmware versions can be updated at the same time!
