At present, IBM does not have a free independent version of the DB2 software, and the competing product Microsoft SQL Server 2005 has a free version. Oracle has recently released a free XE database software.

Feberger, vice president of Gartner, pointed out that the release of the free version of DB2 database software by IBM is only a matter of time.

He pointed out that, like competitors Microsoft and Oracle, IBM expects to greatly increase its share in the database market, just like the support provided by open-source MySQL database software, especially small and medium-sized enterprise programmers.

He also said that, compared with copyrighted database products used for development, MySQL's "free" temptation is attractive to software developers in small and medium-sized enterprises, A small database software with a single CPU license needs to pay more than $2000, and the money is still too much.

However, IBM officials pointed out that the cost of purchasing database software should not cover up the maintenance costs of the product, because it may produce manual costs for maintaining the database, or the technical support costs of the manufacturer.
