In Windows, temporary files exist everywhere at any time, and IE also has its own Temporary Folder. Here, let's take a look at the temporary folder of IE.

Understanding temporary ie folders

After you enter the URL in the IE Address Bar and press enter, ie will first search for the webpage content corresponding to the URL on your hard disk. If you find the URL, the content of the webpage will be called up, display in the browser window, and then connect to the server of the website to read and display the updated content. If no content is found, ie will directly connect to the server, download the webpage content on the service, and save the webpage content on the hard disk of the computer while displaying it in the browser window. The default storage location is "C: \ WINDOWS \ Temporary Internet Files. This is the temporary ie folder, which stores the content of the Web page you recently browsed.

Set temporary ie folder

The temporary ie folder stores the content of the Web page you have viewed, which can speed up your future browsing. However, the default settings of this folder may not be optimal for your computer. To achieve the best effect, you can change these settings as needed. The method is as follows:

1. Click the "tools \ Internet Options" command to bring up the "Internet Options" dialog box.

2. Click the "General" tab and click "Settings" under "Temporary Internet Files". The "Settings" dialog box appears (1 ).

3. Under "Temporary Internet Folders", drag the slider under "used disk space" to change the disk space available for the temporary ie folder. If you have sufficient hard disk space, you may wish to set this value to a greater value; otherwise, it should be smaller. This value is set to a large value to increase the browsing speed.

If your computer has multiple partitions, you can specify other folders to store temporary ie files by clicking the "Move folder" button. The "Browse folder" dialog box is displayed, find and click the new temporary folder, and click OK. Of course, you must restart your computer before using the new location to store temporary ie files.

4. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Clear temporary files

The existence of temporary ie files can indeed increase the browsing speed, but these temporary files occupy disk space and expose your online whereabouts. To delete temporary ie files, follow these steps:

1. Click the "tools \ Internet Options" command to bring up the "Internet Options" dialog box.

2. Click the "General" tab and click "delete file" under "temporary files on the Internet". The "delete file" dialog box is displayed.

3. To delete temporary offline files at the same time, select the "delete all offline content" check box and click "OK" (2 ).

In fact, after you perform the preceding operations, when you view the properties of the temporary ie folder in "Resource Manager, the folder still occupies several megabytes or even dozens of megabytes of disk space. Why? In fact, a folder named "index. DAT file, which is an index file that stores the index of temporary ie files. The more web pages you browse, the larger the file capacity. However, on the Windows GUI, you cannot view or delete the file. To delete the file, follow these steps:

1. Click the "close system" command in the "Start" menu. The "close windows" dialog box is displayed.

2. Select Restart computer and switch to MS-DOS mode, and click OK.

3. Enter the following command at the DOS prompt and press the Enter key after each command line:

Cd c: \ WINDOWS \ Tempor ~ 1 \ content. ie5 (if you are not using ie5 or IE6 but ie4, change this command:

Cd c: \ WINDOWS \ Tempor ~ 1)
Del index. dat
Exit

When you re-enter windows, the system will re-create an "index. dat" file in the temporary ie folder, because there is no index of any temporary IE file to be recorded, it is naturally very small.
