Ie9 supports H.264 video standards, not Apple Safari

When I watched Internet news today, I was very depressed when I saw all major websites posting an article titled "ie9 will support Apple Safari Firefox and opera cold. In order to find out the situation, I finally figured out the support and lack of support between browsers.

The actual situation is:In the HTML 5 video standard, ie9 and Safari support H.264, while Firefox and Opera Support Ogg theora..

The reason for this is that authorization is required to use the H.264 standard, while Ogg theora is free and open-source.

H.264It is a high-performance video codec technology. At present, there are two organizations that develop video codec technology internationally, one is "ITU (ITU-T)", which has developed standards such as H.261, H.263, H.263 +, etc, the other is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which has developed standards such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, etc. H. 264 is a new digital video coding standard jointly developed by the Joint Video group (JVT) formed by the two organizations, so it is not only the ITU-T H. 264, which is an ISO/IEC MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) and will become Part 1 of the MPEG-4 standard. Therefore, whether it is MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG-4 Part 10, or ISO/IEC 14496-10, all refer to H.264.

Ogg theoraIt is an open and free video compression coding technology released by the xiph Foundation. As part of the Foundation's Ogg project, theora supports everything from VP3 hd to the MPEG-4/DivX format. No patent license fee is required for using theora. Firefox and opera will provide native support for Ogg/theora videos through the new HTML5 elements.

Currently, Google's own YouTube, Microsoft's ie9, Apple's iPad, iPhone, and Safari support H. 264 encoding, which is higher than the playback image quality of Ogg theora encoding, but Firefox does not support H. 264 because Ogg theora is fully open-source, and H. 264 authorization for MPEG la is required. However, MPEG la announced in 264 that it had extended its H.264 free authorization period until February, tempting Mozilla and other companies to support their standards.

As a result, the current HTML 5 video encoding has formed two camps: H. videos encoded in 264 can be viewed on safari, chrome, and ie9, while HTML 5 videos encoded in Ogg theora can be viewed on Firefox, chrome, and opera.

The latest progress on using H.264 or the Ogg theora standard is that Google has plans to announce open-source Vp8 video encoding technology at the Google I/O Developer Conference held this month. At that time, both Firefox and chrome will announce support for Vp8-encoded HTML 5 video playback.
