Small-sized enterprise office networks use ADSL shared Internet access, which is cost-effective. Upgrading ADSL Modem is a highly technical task. If you are not careful, the device may not work properly. Therefore, please think twice before you start!

The general practice is to use the hub with the proxy server software, using a computer as the proxy server, other computers share the Internet through this proxy. Without such Internet sharing, there have been many drawbacks over time. The most obvious difference is that if the proxy server is not started, other computers cannot connect to the Internet. can I directly access the Internet through the shared ADSL Modem without bypassing the proxy server?

Yes, you only need to use the ADSL Modem with the routing function! If the communication department in which you install ADSL has server support, use the ADSL Modem with the routing function.

In this case, the ADSL Modem I used two years ago belongs to the old type and does not have the routing function. Isn't the old ADSL "cat" that has been fighting with me for many years indispensable? In fact, you can upgrade the early ADSL Modem device to provide the routing function. However, not all ADSL Modem devices support "soft upgrade", for example, the USB interface can not be upgraded, and the RJ-45 interface device connected to the network card can be correctly upgraded.

To upgrade an ADSL Modem device, you can change the firmware of the internal data set on the device, change its running mode to the routing working mode, and then refresh and save the data. Because the major upgrade points provided by manufacturers of ADSL Modem devices are different, the upgrade methods are also focused on each other. The author can only briefly summarize the General upgrade steps, for device upgrades from different manufacturers, refer to the specific product upgrade instructions:

1. Check whether the nameplate number at the bottom of your Modem is consistent with the product number specified on the manufacturer's website. After confirming that your device can be upgraded, go to the corresponding website to download the upgraded software;

2. Modify the IP address of the NIC connected to the Modem, set it to 168.0.0.1, and set the subnet mask of the NIC to 255.255.255.0;

3. Create a simple FTP server and set the network IP address of the FTP server to the same as that of the NIC, that is, 168.0.0.1. start the anonymous user name and set the password to null. Set the folder where the downloaded upgrade software is located to the root folder accessed by the user;

4. Click Start> Run and enter telnet 168.0.0.1. then, you can enter the FTP user name, password, and software file name in the logon interface. When the screen shows whether you want to update the firmware, you can answer "Yes; after confirmation, the Modem can be restarted in a short time;

5. Run the telnet 168.0.0.1 command again to log on to the Modem. On the logon prompt page, run the show command to check whether the new model mark of the current Modem is displayed on the display screen, it indicates that the firmware has been successfully upgraded;

6. By now, all the ADSL Modem devices used have the routing function. To manage this simple "Router", you only need to open the IE browser, enter 168.0.0.1 in the address bar of the browser to open a Web page dedicated to Routing Management;

7. On this page, you can set the working mode of the ADSL Modem device to "Router", and then restart the ADSL Modem device. Then, go to the Web page of the routing management function, enter your ADSL user name and password, and then select the "PPPoE" connection method. After setting all relevant parameters, You can unplug the Modem power cord and connect it again, so that the Modem can be started again;

8. Return to the computer system directly connected to the ADSL Modem device, right-click "Network Neighbor" on the desktop, and select the "attribute" command. In the "Network Properties" dialog box that appears, select "TCP/IP protocol ". Click the "properties" button on the corresponding interface. On the settings page that appears, set the IP address of the Local Computer to automatically obtain and set the gateway address to 168.0.0.1, then, set the corresponding DNS server to the IP address of the DNS server of the corresponding ISP.
