Part 3 vSphere storage DRS

Chapter 4 Data Storage Configuration

A Data Storage cluster forms the basis for storing DRS. In a single individual, it is best to describe the collection of collected data 17). Once the configuration is complete, the data storage cluster is centrally managed rather than separately managed, note that the data storage cluster is referred to as "storage database" in the vSphere API ".

A Data Storage cluster is used as the target storage during the publishing process. The publishing process not only refers to creating virtual machines, but also to adding disks to existing virtual machines, clone virtual machines or store vMotion mobile virtual machines in a data storage cluster. Once the storage DRS is enabled, the data storage cluster changes to a load balancing domain, and the initialization location selects the data storage with low space utilization and the data storage with low I/O load, when the threshold value is exceeded and a large number of I/O or space is not balanced, load balancing computing generates migration suggestions.

The workflow for creating a data storage cluster is straightforward.

Create a data storage Cluster

Before presenting the eight basic steps, we must know when to create a data storage cluster. We want to list some constraints and our suggestions for creating a data storage cluster.

Constraints:

  • VMFS and NFS cannot be part of the same data storage cluster.

  • Similar disk types should be used on the data storage Cluster

  • Each data storage cluster consists of up to 64 Data Storage

  • Each vCenter server can contain a maximum of 256 data storage clusters.

  • Each data storage cluster can contain up to 9000 VMDK files.

Suggestion:

  • A group of disks with similar features: RAID-1 and RAID-1, Replicated and Replicated, Replicated and Replicate)

  • Provision of Information-Storage awareness through vSphere Storage APIs

Procedure

1. Go to the home page

2. Go to the storage page.

3. Select data storage in the join View

4. Click "Create a new data storage cluster"

5. enter the name of the data storage cluster and enable storage DRS

6. Select a virtual data center for the new data storage Cluster

7. Select "not automatic" or "Fully Automatic"

8. Accept all default settings and click Continue.

9. Select the host and cluster you want to add

10. select an appropriate data storage

11. Verify the selection and click Finish

The data storage cluster is gradually created in a few seconds. You may want all the stored DRS running time rules to be the same. We will discuss it in the following section. If "Storage DRS" is not enabled, the data storage cluster will not be created, and it will be included in the data storage list. However, storage DRS is not recommended to be stored in the data storage cluster. To publish or migrate data, move it anywhere.

Name and location

First, enable storage DRS, especially the name of the data storage cluster, and check whether the "enable storage DRS" option is checked.

18: Enable storage DRS

When "enable storage DRS" is activated, the following functions are enabled:

  • Initialize a virtual disk based on space and I/O Load

  • Load Balancing between data storage and data storage Clusters

  • Balance IO load between data storage and data storage Clusters

Enabling or disabling "enable storage DRS" will immediately take effect for all components. If necessary, the I/O balancing function can be independently disabled, if you do not select the "open storage DRS" option, all storage DRS will be disabled,

For example, automatic level, radical control, threshold, rules, and storage DRS scheduling will be saved. When storage DRS is disabled, they may be restored to the original state.

Storage DRSAutomatic level

Storage DRS provides 2 automation levels

Non-automatic manual mode)

In manual mode, the default mode is used. When the data storage cluster is set to manual mode, the location and migration suggestions are provided to users, but they will not run until they manually confirm.

Automatic

The fully automated mode allows storage DRS to automatically accept recommendations for space and I/O Load Balancing migration without user intervention. However, you still need to confirm the initialization location.

Storage DRS allows virtual machines to have personalized automatic level settings, regardless of the automatic level settings of the data storage cluster, the automatic level of the virtual machine level is expanded in Chapter 21 | storage DRS computing

Partial automatic loss

Storage DRS does not provide partial automation, that is to say, it does not provide the automatic initial location of the VM, and the suggestions for the initialization location must be confirmed manually. Even if you select the automatic level, the automatic level only specifies the suggestions for automatic confirmation, including Load Balancing suggestions for space and I/O.

Storage DRSRuntime settings

Now keep the default settings. Chapter 21st storage DRS computing includes
