Application and Market Prospects of the Standard

The IEEE 802.16 standard d can support 10 GHz ~ The GHz line-of-sight propagation frequency band and the non-line-of-sight propagation frequency band below 11 GHz. The application varies according to the transmission characteristics of different frequencies. For 10 GHz ~ Because the terminal needs to have an outdoor antenna, its application is mainly to provide Backhaul wireless transmission for small and medium-sized enterprises.

For non-line-of-sight (NLOS) frequency bands below 11 GHz, as it can achieve indoor coverage, its applications will mainly focus on providing broadband data services for individual users. In addition, the IEEE 802.16 standard can also implement the backend transmission function for enterprise Wi-Fi hotspot areas, as well as lan interconnection, data leased line, narrowband business and base station interconnection.

Compared with other mobile communication systems, the 802.16e system has high spectrum utilization and transmission rate, so it is suitable for providing broadband Internet access and mobile video services. Compared with other wired access methods (such as xDSL, Cable, and optical fiber access), IEEE 802.16 standard broadband wireless access features faster deployment, higher scalability, and higher flexibility.

For areas with low population density and ease of xDSL deployment, the "wireless DSL" service can be provided using the 802.16 standard, which is applicable to families and small businesses. In buildings of medium-sized enterprises, 802.16 can support high-speed connection instead of optical fiber access.

Comparison between 802.16e technology and 3G technology

In general, in terms of wireless transmission technology, 802.16e sacrifices mobility in exchange for improved data transmission capabilities, and its data bandwidth is better than 3G systems. In terms of networking, 802.16e is not mature enough compared with 3G systems, and relevant standards need to be further improved to better support mobile services in the future.

In terms of services, 802.16e mainly targets mobile broadband Internet access services and defines a complete QoS system. In the 802.16e standard, four service types are defined based on different service features such as voice, video, and data, which correspond to different QoS levels for differentiated resource allocation, provide different levels of assurance for different businesses.

In 3G systems, the core network voice and group data are separated. for voice, circuit switching is adopted and high QoS is guaranteed. For grouped data businesses, WCDMA defines a relatively complete QoS mechanism, but in CDMA 2000 there is no QoS for service classification.

To sum up, the IEEE 802.16 standard technology has good market potential. For domestic operators, as a new access method, the IEEE 802.16 standard can help operators without wired access resources quickly enter the broadband market. However, considering standardization, commercialization time, global unified spectrum, and technical features, there is still a certain distance between 802.16e and commercial use. In the future technological development process, multiple wireless technologies will coexist for a long time, complement each other and compete with each other.
