Inode number and inode table in Linux

Source: Internet
Author: User

What is inode number?

Inode number is automatically generated when a partition is formatted as an ext2 or ext3 file system.

Inode number can determine how many files or directories are stored in this partition, because each file and directory has an inode number that corresponds to it.

What is inode table?

Each inode number has an inode table.

Inode table records the metadata (metadata) corresponding to the inode number file ).

The main function of metadata is to describe the attributes of the data:

"PointerRecords the blocks occupied by the file.

Before you store a file, the Linux system will find the inode number corresponding to the file. Then, read the corresponding inode table based on the inode number of the file. The "pointer" in the inode table can know which blocks the file is stored in to store the file.
