Drag an image or text into Fireworks

You can drag vector objects, bitmap images, or text from any application that supports drag operations.

Paste into Fireworks

Pasting an object copied from another application into Fireworks places the object in the center of the active document.

You can paste text or an object from the Clipboard in any of the following formats:

adobe FreeHand version 7 or higher

Adobe Illustrator

png

pict (in Mac OS)

Dib (in Windows)

bmp (in Windows)

ASCII text

EPS

wbmp

txt

RTF

1 Copy the object or text you want to paste in another application.

2 in Fireworks, paste the object or text into the document.

The position of the pasted object

The location of the pasted object depends on the selection:

• If at least one object is selected on a layer, the pasted object is placed before the selected object on the same layer (stacked directly above the selected object).

• If the layer itself is selected and no object is selected or all objects are selected, the pasted object is placed before the topmost object on the same layer (stacked directly above it).

• If more than two or more than two objects are selected on multiple layers, the pasted object is placed before the topmost object on top (stacked directly above it).

• If you select the page layer or select an object on the Web layer, the pasted object is placed before all other objects at the bottom (or on top of them).

Note: the "Web Layer" is a special layer that contains all the Web objects. It always stays at the top of the layers panel.

Resample a pasted object

When resampling, pixels are added or removed in the resized bitmap to match the appearance of the in-situ diagram as much as possible. Resampling a bitmap to a higher resolution usually leads to little loss of quality. Resampling to a lower resolution will always lose data and generally degrade the quality.

To resample a bitmap object with a paste operation

1 Copy the bitmap to the Clipboard in Fireworks or other programs.

2 Select "Edit" > "Paste" in Fireworks.

3 if the bitmap image on the Clipboard has a different resolution than the current document, select a resample option.

Resample keeps the original width and height of the pasted bitmap unchanged, and adds or removes pixels if necessary.

Do not resample to keep all the original pixels, which may make the pasted image larger or smaller relative to the expected size.

Import a PNG file to the Fireworks document layer

When you import a Fireworks PNG file to the current layer of the active Fireworks document, the hotspot and slice objects will be placed on the document's page layer.

Fireworks will keep the proportions of the imported images unchanged.

1 in the Layers panel, select the layer to which you want to import the file.

2 Select "File" > "Import" To open the Import dialog box.

3 Navigate to the file you want to import, and then click Open.

4 on the canvas, position the import pointer where you want to place the upper-left corner of the image.

5 do one of the following:

• Click to import full-size images.

• When importing, drag the import pointer to resize the image.

Import from a digital camera or scanner

You can import images from a digital camera or scanner only if your digital camera or scanner is TWAIN-compatible (in Windows) or if you use the built-in Image Capture feature (in Mac OS). Images imported into Fireworks from a digital camera or scanner are opened as a new document.

Install all of the software drivers, modules, and plug-ins necessary for your camera or scanner before you try to import the images into Fireworks.

The Plug-ins folder is located in the Fireworks application folder. In Mac OS, Fireworks automatically finds the Photoshop acquire plug-in in that folder.

Directing Fireworks to the Photoshop acquire plug-in

1 in Fireworks, select Edit > Preferences (in Windows) or select Fireworks > Preferences (in Mac OS).)

2 Click the Plugins category.

3 Select "Photoshop plugin" and navigate to the folder that contains the plug-in.

If the "Select Photoshop Plugins Folder" (in Windows) or the Select folder (in Mac OS) dialog box does not open automatically, see

Browse to the folder.

Import images from a digital camera (in Windows)

1 Connect the digital camera to the computer.

2 in Fireworks, select File > Scan, and then select Twain or Twain selection.

3 Select the image source and the image you want to import.

The user interface for digital camera software appears.

4 Follow the instructions to apply the settings.

Import images from a digital camera (in Mac OS)

1 Connect the digital camera to the computer.

2 in Fireworks, select "File" > "Get" and select "Get from Camera" or "Select Camera".

3 Select the camera and the image you want to import.

4 Follow the instructions to apply the settings.

Import images from a scanner

1 connect the scanner to the computer.

2 If you have not installed the software that came with your scanner, perform the installation.

3 do one of the following:

• (in Windows) in Fireworks, select File > Scan, and then choose Twain or Twain selection.

• (in Mac OS) in Fireworks, select File > Get, and then choose Twain or Twain selection.

Note: For most TWAIN modules or Photoshop acquire Plug-ins, additional dialog boxes will appear prompting you to set additional options.

4 Follow the instructions to apply the settings.
