Lotus Notes officially support the Linux platform from version 7, but the authorities only support Red Hat Linux. This article describes the problems encountered when installing and using Lotus Notes 7.0.1 on a popular desktop operating system, Ubuntu Linux 6.10, and how to address these issues. These experiences can also be applied to other Linux distributions.

Starting with version 7, IBM's groupware product Lotus Notes officially began to support the Linux platform, and v7.0.1 was the first public release of Lotus Notes for Linux. Unlike the corresponding Windows version of the Lotus Notes client, Lotus Notes for Linux provides functionality through a framework called IBM Workplace Managed client. For this reason, the IBM Workplace Managed Client Framework is installed while Lotus Notes for Linux is installed. This will be described in detail in the following description of the installation process.

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution that starts with Debian, and is open source, completely free. The goal of Ubuntu is to build an easy-to-use operating system for end users, and that is true. It releases a new version every six months, with the development team and community providing 18 months of support for each release, with v6.06 having up to 3 years of support time (Server Edition is 5 years). The most recent version is v6.10, released in October 2006. Ubuntu uses GNOME as a desktop environment, and it has two related project groups: Kubuntu (using KDE Desktop), Xubuntu (using XFCE Desktop). The main patron and supporter of Ubuntu is the Canonical company.

Conventions and goals

As stated in the summary, the goal of this article is to install Lotus Notes for Linux 7.0.1 on Ubuntu Linux 6.10, and for the sake of ease of drafting, make the following conventions:

    • uses an operating system user name of Huangys, whose host directory is/home/huangys/
    • The original installation file is located in/home/huangys/notes_inst_files/
    • IBM The Workplace Managed Client Framework will be installed to the/opt/ibm/workplacemanagedclient/

      Toggle Ubuntu System to English state

      Ubuntu defaults to uniform use of UTF-8 as a character set, while is not a common character set that matches various languages (such as GB2312,GBK in Simplified Chinese). See the Chinese status of Ubuntu as follows:

      huangys@sea:~$ locale

      LANG=ZH_CN. UTF-8

      Language=zh_cn:zh

      lc_ctype= "ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_numeric=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_time=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_collate=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_monetary=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_messages=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_paper=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_name=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_address=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_telephone=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_measurement=" ZH_CN. UTF-8 "

      lc_identification=" ZH_CN. UTF-8

      Lc_all=

      And on the other hand, the IBM Workplace Managed Client Installation Wizard enables the appropriate language based on the locale settings of the current system, and the garbled state occurs (see Figure 1). Therefore, we need to temporarily switch Ubuntu to the English state, after the installation is complete and then switch back to the Simplified Chinese state.
