Install Tor, Polipo & Vidalia in Ubuntu10.10

1. Install the Tor Browser Bundle package. This is a very considerate installation-free version. After downloading it, You can decompress it directly.

The latest package contains the following applications:

Vidalia 0.2.12 (with Qt 4.6.2)
Tor 0.2.2.27-beta (with libevent-2.0.10-stable, zlib-1.2.3 and openssl-0.9.8p)
Firefox 3.6.17

 

The decompress command is tar-xvzf tor-browser-gnu-linux * .tar.gz.

 

Go to the decompressed folder and run the start-tor-browser script to start Vidalia. The Vidalia control panel is displayed.

 

It may be an English interface. You can select simplified Chinese characters in Settings -- Appearance -- Language ". Then you can configure the settings in the control panel, but before setting the settings, you need to complete the following two steps.

 

2. Install Polipo. Polipo is a cache Web proxy that can well Support HTTP pipelining, so it is suitable for Tor latency. Polipo versions should be at least 1.0.4. Therefore, earlier versions lack SOCKS support and cannot work with Tor.

You can install it through the source:

Sudo apt-update

Sudo apt-get install polipo

3. Request a bridge.

Use a gmail mailbox to send an email with the subject and text for "get bridges" to the bridges@torproject.com and will soon receive a response. The reply contains several bridges.

 

4. Vidadia settings.

The settings-General settings are as follows:

 

Set "Settings-network" as follows: add the bridges obtained in step 1 one by one.

 

 

 

5. Start the Tor. After completing the settings, go back to the Vidalia control panel and click "Start Tor". After a while, "Tor network connected" will be displayed, and Firefox 3.6.17 will automatically start, then you can be at your own freedom.
