Install Linux on PS3-general Linux technology-Linux technology and application information. For more information, see the following. Source: driver home
As early as the launch of the PS3, many gamers tried to install the Linux operating system on the host for different purposes. Later, Sony simply reserved the option of re-partitioning and installing other operating systems on the XMB operating interface of the PS3. Linux is officially supported. The TweakTown website recently detailed the entire process of installing the Linux operating system on the PS3.
Necessary preparations:
PS3
TV or display connected with HDMI or chromatic aberration (above P)
Connected PC with a DVD recorder
USB keyboard and mouse
USB flash drive
Patience
Preparation Process:
You can install multiple Linux systems on the PS3, including OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora8, Gentoo, and Debian. But here we chose the official Sony recommendation, based on Fedora and the Yellow DogLinux Yellow Dog optimized for the PS3 hardware. Although version 6.0 has been developed, it is expected that it will not be officially published in early March. Therefore, the current version is 5.0.1, which can be downloaded from the official website for free:
Download YDL 5.0.1
Http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/downloads/
The downloaded file "yellowdog-5.0.1-phoenix-20070511-PS3.iso" and burned it to a DVD.
Next, connect the USB keyboard and mouse on the PS3 (of course, make sure that the mouse and keyboard support the PS3 application), use a USB flash drive to back up the PS3 game archive file, and then you can officially start.
In XMB, select:
System> Format drive> PS3 HDD Format hard disk

Installation Process
After a Linux instance is restarted, The Kboot command line interface is displayed. Wait or press enter to continue Linux installation.
Finally, we can see the graphic installation interface. (The minimum resolution required for the YDL interface is 720 p)

System settings:
Although the installation has been completed, the current YDL system is almost useless, and a series of settings are required to make full use of its actual use, at least to connect to the network.
The circle button is equivalent to the Start menu here. Select:
Start> Applications> System Tools> System Config> Network Config
[Img = 450,258] http://news.mydrivers.com/img/20080226/12513444.jpg#/img]
Enter the root password (administrator password rather than user password entered during installation)
Double-click eth0, select the wireless tag, and set the wireless network SSID and WEP password.

After setting, select eth0 and click "activate" again.
After that, you should be able to use Firefox to access the Internet. The next important issue is the upgrade. Select:
Start> Apps> System Tools> Software Management> Software Updater
[Img = 450,258] http://news.mydrivers.com/img/20080226/12521055.jpg#/img]
Enter the root password, and the program will look for available upgrades. After confirmation, you can have another cup of tea.

Summary
Due to authorization issues, YDL does not integrate multimedia Codec. In addition, because the core of YDL Fedora is mainly for the PowerPC architecture system, the Codec supporting it is not only not rich, but also charged a lot (such as Fluendo and other websites ). The same applies to other software. YDL is not rich enough because it does not have a wide user base like Ubuntu and other Linux systems. In addition to YDL, the author also tried Ubuntu. Due to the firmware issue of PS32.0, there are many problems with the compatibility between the PS3 Nic and Linux. YDL is easy to install and does not need to be modified for the PS3.
In addition, because the PS3 memory is less than 512 MB and the core operating frequency of the Cell processor is only 400 MHz, YDL does not run fast on the PS3.
