Mate is a Gnome 2-based desktop environment. It is a branch of Gnome 2 and is created by Arch Linux developers to provide users with a Classic Gnome Classic (Gnome 2) Desktop.

CentOS 7 installation command:

Sudo rpm-Uvh http://dl.Fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/beta/7/x86_64/epel-release-7-0.2.noarch.rpm
Sudo yum install epel-release-7-0.2.noarch.rpm
Sudo yum groupsinstall mate-desktop

Debian 8 Jessie and Debian 7 Wheezy installation command

First install a basic software package required for the MATE desktop, and enter the following command on the Debian system:

Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-core

Install Mate desktop:
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

Install Mate desktop and additional devices:
