{The first problem that most people encounter when installing Linux is that Linux doesn't recognize your graphics card. It is difficult to enter X Window if the graphics card is not installed correctly or a driver is selected randomly. Even reluctantly, because the resolution is too low, the desktop text and pictures are magnified several times, still can not use. My linux is red Hat, graphics card is Trident Blade, belong to Linux do not know the list. I was looking around for information, after a period of time groping, finally successfully installed the graphics driver. Now I will write out the experience, so that everyone can successfully enter the X Window, enjoy the style of Linux.
First, download the driver
First you need to find the driver for the graphics card for Linux. Now most of the 3D graphics cards have a for Linux driver, can go to each card manufacturer's home page or Linux related sites to look for. I found the driver named XF86_SVGA, file format is tar.gz, Linux is a compressed file. Need to explain, my XFREE86 server under the Display module has Xf86_mono, XF86_VGA16, XF86_SVGA and other types, in the installation of video card, the server according to the situation of the video card to load different display module, if the display module loading is not correct, the graphics card will not be normal display. XF86_SVGA can support 256 color or higher color, our 3D graphics card depends on it.
Second, the file decompression
Because the download is a compressed file, you need to extract, you can use the TAR command under Linux decompression, you can also use WinZip to extract the files to the hard disk in any directory under Windows (I will extract the files to the C:\win98\TEMP directory), People who are unfamiliar with Linux commands are best able to decompress under windows and save a lot of hassle.
Third, mount the disk drive
Linux needs to mount a disk drive to read the file, as described in the computer report, "Sharing Windows resources (on) in Linux," 2000 35, version 19). After starting Linux, enter the "mount-t vfat/dev/hda1/mnt/winc" command under the character interface and load the C disk under Linux. It should be noted that if you are in the previous step of the choice is to unpack under Linux, you have to load the disk drive this step, and then the file decompression, the steps are just reversed.
Iv. Copy of documents
Copy the XF86_SVGA file to the/usr/x11r6/bin directory. Note that this is for the Red Hat version, and the paths for the other versions are not necessarily the same. I use the command is "Cp/mnt/winc/win98/temp/xf86_svga/usr/x11r6/bin" (everyone can be flexible according to their own situation, the key is the path must be correct, but also to distinguish between the case of letters). If the system prompts for a file with the same name, ask if it is overwritten, be sure to select "Y". These old files may have been loaded before the video card was installed, which is of no practical use to us. Here to tell you a little trick, in the input file name, after the XF86 after the Press TAB, and then the transmission SVGA, underline _ can come out, press the keyboard on the underscore key is useless, remember.
Five, configure the video card
When the file copy is complete, enter xconfigurator and start the graphics configuration program. I still did not find Trident Blade in the graphics list, so I chose the last option "Unlist", then select the loaded display module as SVGA, then select the display model, video memory size, refresh frequency, selected 16-bit color, 800x600 resolution. Everything is ready, X server began detection, more than 10 seconds later, the test completed, X server has not given the same error message as before. I can't wait to type in StartX, and soon the X window's blue desktop is finally showing up in front of me.
Summary: Install the graphics driver under Linux, first download the driver of the graphics support Linux, then copy it to the/usr/x11r6/bin directory, then start the graphics configuration program to configure it.
In addition to the above methods, there is a more direct way, is to upgrade the XFREE86 version, to its homepage http://www.xfree86.org download the latest version of 4.0.1, the stable version is 3.3.2. The new version will support more hardware devices, but first check the instructions on the home page to determine if your video card is supported by the newer versions.
