Install ubuntu9.10 on ThinkPad t61

I recently fell in love with Ubuntu and installed several machines in one breath, including my beloved t61. My t61 (al1) has been using XP from the beginning for more than two years. Although many software has been installed and unloaded, it is still very stable and has not lived up to my expectations. Even so, I decided to install another ubuntu9.10.

I. Preparations

1. Divide the space of installed ubuntu.

Although I love Ubuntu, I am still the first in terms of security and maintain dual systems. Use acronis disk ctor to divide 10 Gb of spare space from one more disk space in idle space. This space does not need to be formatted. During installation, the space will be found and formatted.

2. Burn the ubuntu9.10 installation disk.

Although it is a free operating system, the cost of the dial is still not enough. Of course, if it is installed under a virtual machine, there is no need for the dial. Download the ubuntu9.10 image file from the official Ubuntu website, and then burn it.

Ii. Installation

The Installation Process of ubuntu9.10 is also quite simple. If you do not set a dual-system, you only need to continue the next step.

The only setting is the installation location. When you specify the location for installation, the installer can recognize all the disk space and have different colors. The installer can be automatically installed in idle disk space without overwriting the original files. However, it cannot be directly installed in the space reserved above, so you need to manually specify the installation location.

There are three options on the interface for specifying the installation location (this is not a pity, so the specific options in some steps may not be accurate), select the third "Manual )", next step. All partitions are shown in the list in the following interface. Right-click the reserved partition and choose create )". This will let you specify the partition type. I divided the reserved 10 Gb space into two parts. One part is formatted as ext4, which is used to install the Ubuntu system, which is about 9.2 GB, some are used as swap areas (swap space) (it was not intended to divide the space, but the installer always prompts that not setting will affect the performance ).

After the above installation, everything went smoothly.

Note: It is best to disconnect the network during installation.

I encountered this problem when installing 9.04. During the installation process, the progress bar is directly located somewhere (as if you are looking for a software source), and the network cable is immediately restored.

3. Driver and software installation

1. graphics card driver (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140 m)

I have always been looking forward to Ubuntu's 3D desktop effects. However, the systems installed earlier cannot be fulfilled due to driver problems. This time, the t61 independent graphics card should not disappoint me, but the first solution is the graphics card driver.

At the beginning, according to the previous classic article on enabling 3D desktop on the Internet, the Nv driver was installed using envyng, but the following problems always occurred:

Dowloading the packages... <br/> [========================================== 62.5% ======>] result cocould not be parsed <br/> error in function pulse <br/> traceback (most recent call last): <br/> file "/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/envy/packagemanager. PY ", line 75, in Pulse <br/> self. newobject. updateui (percent) <br/> file "interface. PY ", line 65, in updateui <br/> numhashes = int (round (numhashes) <br/> typeerror: an integer is required

I tried it several times without any changes. So I used the system's built-in hardware driver for automatic search. I also found two Drivers (version 173 and version 185). Select the recommended 185 driver and Click Activate. However, when the progress bar went around 1/4, the system would not be able to survive, and the computer was restarted several times.

It seems that some netizens have successfully installed the software package manager, so they opened the manager with the hope of the last line. Here we finally see the dawn, such:

Because the driver of version 173 already contains 140 m, and the version is too high to cause compatibility problems, no version 185 is installed. After the installation is complete, restart the machine, enable "hardware driver" again, select "version 173" driver, and click "Activate.

A detailed description is provided.

2. Enable fingerprint

Fingerprint is a very fashion and practical function in t61. Can fingerprint be supported in Ubuntu? The answer is amazing.

Open the new software manager and find the software package related to thinkfinger, for example:

We can see that only a few brands are supported, as are IBM/Lenovo. After installation, You need to perform simple settings:

(1) Open the terminal and run the following command:

~ $ Sudo TF-tool -- acquire

It can be seen that the same finger needs to be refreshed three times. After the operation, the information is saved in a file named. thinkfinger. BIR.

(2) copy the file to the/etc/pam_thinkfinger/directory:

~ $ Sudo CP ~ /. Thinkfinger. Bir/etc/pam_thinkfinger/

You can also change the file name to a user name that is easy to remember.

(3) modify the/etc/PAM. d/common-auth file:

~ $ Sudo gedit/etc/PAM. d/common-auth

As shown in, add the content shown in the red line as the first line of the official file content:

Save and restart your computer. When you log on, you can use the fingerprint directly. At the same time, you can directly use the fingerprint when executing the sudo command or entering the password.

Of course, the compatibility problem of ubuntu still exists. For example, some buttons in eclipse3.5.1 do not respond to mouse clicks and can only use shortcut keys. If you encounter the same problem, you can view my other article.
