Overview of workflows in SharePoint 2013
In SharePoint 2013, Workflow (built on Windows Workflow Foundation 4.5) and WCF hosted in Workflow Manager, that is, Workflow Manager provides the management of workflow definitions, It also hosts the execution process of the workflow instance, which is the new workflow engine. To listen to SharePoint events for workflows (such as itemcreated, itemupdated), the platform is routed to Workflow by using Windows Azure Service Bus, which is coordinated by OAuth Manager. For backhaul, the SharePoint REST API is used to fall back to SharePoint. (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/zh-cn/library/jj163181.aspx for specific details), the following illustration is the advanced architecture of the workflow infrastructure:
As you can see from the illustration above, the workflow execution engine workflow Manger has been detached from SharePoint (in Windows Azure, that is, Windows Azure is the new execution host, and SharePoint 2010 is completely different) and runs independently, This provides both flexibility and scalability.
Install and configure the Workflow Manager
The SharePoint 2013 Workflow platform requires workflow manger to be installed separately and then configured to work with the SharePoint Server 2013 server farm. However, because there are not many servers, the SharePoint Server and Workflow Manager 1.0 installations are configured on the same server.
First, open the Web platrom Installer, search Workflow Manger 1.0, as shown in the following figure:
Next, select the installation, as shown in the following illustration:
