Many of my friends, especially those who are new to network management, are not very familiar with the installation of printing servers, especially built-in printing servers. This is sometimes difficult for employees of the Company to understand. If it is difficult to understand it, the boss will give you away with all his life's anger. In the era when printing servers gradually become popular, it is necessary for network administrators who are engaged in network management and maintenance to master some basic installation and maintenance of printing servers.

This article describes how to install and maintain the built-in printing server using the famous HP jetdirect600N/610N/615N built-in printing server. In fact, the printing servers of these three series include J3110A (600N), J3111A (600N), J4167A (610N), J4169A (610N), and J6057A (615N) five types of printing server products.

1. Install the HP built-in printing server

Before you officially describe how to install the printing server, first understand the basic steps for installing the printing server. The first is the physical installation of the built-in printing server, the installation of the network printer, and finally the Protocol configuration of the server.

The following details:

Step 2: first turn off the printer power, remove the printer I built-in/O slot card on the back of the printer), and then remove HP jetdirect600N/610N/615N) the built-in printing server is inserted into the printer I/O slot in the correct direction.

Note: The locations and directions of the I/O slots of different printers may be different, as shown in 1) There are two ways to insert the built-in printing server in the I/O slot direction.

Note: The built-in printing server must be inserted to the end, so that its golden finger has good contact with the I/O slot of the printer motherboard, just as we usually Insert the PCI interface Nic.

Step 2: fix the positioning screws on the printer's I/O slot on the screw column. Then, according to the specific network type, insert the corresponding network cable to the network interface of the print server. 2) the left is a common RJ-45 twisted pair ethernet cable insertion method; and the right is BNC thin coaxial cable insertion method.

For HP J3111A 600N Ethernet print server, either the RJ-45 or BNC Local interface is available, and for HP J4167A 610N token Web Print Server, the RJ-45 or DB 9 interface may be available. 3) as shown in the left and right figures.

After the network cable is connected, the position of the printer in the network is 4 ). In this case, the printer no longer directly connects to any computer, but directly connects to a switch or hub in the network. The printer also exists as a node of the network.

Step 2: Install the printer on the printer and connect the printer to the network. Then, turn on the printer power switch. Let the printer self-check and print the self-check result on the configuration page to check whether the printing server just installed works properly. For different printers, the method for printing the self-check configuration page is not exactly the same, and the parameter configuration of the configuration page is also different. However, you can directly use the LCD Control Panel window of the printer) select print. 5) HP 4000 and HP4050 printers are installed with the configuration pages printed after the 600N and 610N/615N printing servers.

In this configuration, we want to view the results shown in the "Status" column in some printers. If "I/O Card Ready" is displayed, it indicates that the built-in printing server just installed is working properly and that the printing server was successfully installed. If this prompt is Not displayed on the configuration page, "I/O Card Not Ready" is displayed, indicating that the built-in printing server is Not successfully installed. You need to re-check the preceding installation steps and reinstall it. Generally, it may be because the data is not inserted to the end, resulting in poor contact. You can also view the printer server status indicator to see if the printer server is working properly, as shown in 6 ). If the "10" indicator is on, it indicates that the server is working in the 10 Mbps network status. If the "100" indicator is on, it indicates that the server is working in the Mbps network status. If none of them are on, it indicates that the printing server is not working properly and you need to re-check the previous installation.

Step 2: configure network parameters. After the print server works properly, you need to install the print server administrator. You can configure the network parameters of the printer while installing the administrator. This management program is generally provided by purchasing printers or print servers. Its installation method is similar to that of other programs.

The following describes the main interface:

(7) HP JetAdmin prints the Server Management Program Installation interface. During the installation process, select 8 for the installation options ). Generally, you must select the "Network Printing & Management" option to install the Network printer and administrator functions at the same time. After the program is installed, you can print the network, display the current network printer status, and configure network printer parameters.

After the installation is complete, it's main interface 9.

Figure 9

Step 2: configure the network parameters of the printer. This can be done directly on the LCD front panel of the printer. First, you must configure the network communication protocol used by the printer. For example, if the system is Microsoft Windows, you can directly select the TCP/IP protocol, if there is a Netware system, you also need to configure the Novell IPX/SPX protocol. Their selection is the same as the NIC communication protocol. Note that the default printer configuration enables all communication protocols at the same time. Do not disable unnecessary communication protocols. Otherwise, too many protocols may occupy system resources, this causes network printing performance.

HP printers that can directly configure network parameters through the LCD front panel mainly include:

HP LaserJet 4000/4050/4100/5000/8000/8100/8150/9000 Series EIO interface Monochrome laser printer;
HP Color LaserJet 4500/4550/8500/8550 series EIO interface Color printer;
HP Business InkJet 2200/2250 series EIO interface commercial ink jet printer;
HP DesignJet EIO interface desktop inkjet printer.

For printers without a front panel, such as HP LaserJet 2200 series EIO interface printers, the above-installed HP print server management software or other tool software must be used.

Step 2: After configuring the network parameters, go to the print server management software to perform various print management tasks for each network printer. Under the Options menu of the Jet Admin software, select Refrences ..." 10 ). In this way, the system will automatically find a new network printing device in the network. Generally, if the first three steps are correct, the system will automatically find the network printer you joined, when it appears, double-click it to set it, such as the printer name, IP address, the selected communication protocol, and the paper feed method. Note that the IP address setting is particularly important in these settings, it must be unique in the current network.

0

Step 2: If the above steps are successfully installed, it indicates that the network device has been successfully installed on the network, but to print the network, you must also install the printer on a host, in order to set its sharing properties, if this host is in the enterprise LAN, it is generally installed on a server. This network printer can be found only when a printer is successfully installed on the server. Note that the "local printer" option must be selected during installation on the server, but the "Network Printer" option cannot be selected, as shown in figure 11 ).

1

Click "Next" and select the port used by the printer, as shown in 12 ). Generally, if the preceding printing server is installed normally, you can directly view the newly added port when installing the printer in the "use the following port" drop-down list and select it directly.

2

If the newly added port is not displayed in the "use the following ports" drop-down list, you can create it manually and select the "Create New Port" option. Note that the installation is not a local printer, but a network printer, the port used to communicate with the network is not the port connecting the printer. Although the external printer server is connected to the printer port through the printer port, the network interface of the printer server is used to communicate with the network ), it is a network communication Port, so you must select the "Standard TCP/IP Port" option in common Ethernet when selecting the installation Port ). In this case, a "TCP/IP printer port wizard" is opened, with a dialog box 13 showing the newly added TCP/IP Port address and name configured ). In the "Printer name or IP address" column of the dialog box, enter the IP address configured when the printer server is installed. After adding the port, select this port and add the driver of the corresponding printer.

3

In fact, if the printer server has been successfully installed, a corresponding TCP/IP Port will be created on the network. We can select the corresponding printer port, you can also directly enter the IP address configured on the printed server. Then find the driver for the corresponding printer to install. The subsequent steps are no different from the general printer installation. After the server is installed, the last step is to set the network printer to share. It can be used only when the Workstation user can or can see the network printer.

Step 2: Install a network printer on the workstation. Network Printer installation was completed in the previous step. Now we only need to install the network on the workstation. Select the "Network Printer" option during installation. For details, refer to 0). If the network communication is normal, the selected printer list will be shared in the network, select the corresponding shared printer name to install the printer. Note that you do not need to install the driver at this time, because the driver has been installed on the server, and it is only mapped to such a shared printer on the workstation.

All right, the above eight steps of operating the network printer will be successfully installed, you can achieve network printing.
