This article provides steps for installing VMware Tools in an Ubuntu virtual machine.

To install VMware Tools, you must mount the VMware Tools CD image, extract the content (VMware Tools), and then run Setup.

Note: If VMware Tools is installed, these steps will uninstall it and then reinstall it. When the product is updated, the contained tools package is also updated, so you need to update VMware tools. Ubuntu or Ubuntu Server with a graphical user interface

To mount the CD image and extract the content, follow these steps: Start the virtual machine. Log on to this virtual machine with an account that has administrator or root privileges. Choose:
For fusion: Virtual machines > Installing VMware Tools
For WORKSTATION:VM > Install VMware Tools
For player:player > Management > Installing VMware Tools

Note: If you are running a lightweight version of Fusion, a Workstation version without VMware Tools, or VMware Player, you will be prompted to download Tools before you can install them. At this point, click Download Now to start the download.

Open the VMware Tools CD loaded on the Ubuntu desktop. Right-click a file name similar to vmwaretools.x.x.x-xxxx.tar.gz, click Extract to, and then select the Ubuntu desktop to which you want to save the extracted content.

The Vmware-tools-distrib folder is then uncompressed to the Ubuntu desktop.

To install VMware Tools in Ubuntu, follow these steps: Go to Application > Accessories > Terminals. In terminal, run the following command to navigate to the Vmware-tools-distrib folder:

CD Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib

Run the following command to install VMware Tools:

sudo./vmware-install.pl-d

Note: The-D switch assumes that you want to accept the default settings. If you do not use-D, press RETURN to accept the default value or provide your own answer.

Enter your Ubuntu password. Restart the Ubuntu virtual machine after the VMware Tools installation is complete.Ubuntu Server with command line interface onlyGo to virtual machine > install VMware Tools (or VM > install VMware Tools).

On the Ubuntu client, run the following command: sudo mkdir/mnt/cdrom

When prompted to enter a password, please enter the Ubuntu Administrator user password.

Note: The password you type is not displayed for security reasons. You do not need to re-enter your password for the next five minutes.

sudo mount/dev/cdrom/mnt/cdrom or sudo mount/dev/sr0/mnt/cdrom

The file name of the VMware Tools bundle varies depending on your VMware product version. Run the following command to find the exact name:

Ls/mnt/cdrom Tar xzvf/mnt/cdrom/vmwaretools-x.x.x-xxxx.tar.gz-c/tmp/

Note: X.x.x-xxxx is the version that was identified in the previous step.

Cd/tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/sudo./vmware-install.pl-d

After the installation is complete, run the following command to restart the virtual machine:

sudo reboot
