Installing Solaris 10 on VMware

Oracle Solaris 11 is the world's most advanced enterprise operating system, providing a secure, fast, simple enterprise cloud environment and DevOps. In this article we will use the Solaris 10 release, but you can follow the same steps to install the latest version of Solaris 11 that you just released.

We follow the steps below to complete the installation of Solaris on VMware Workstation 12.

1. Boot

Open the VMware Workstation on your home page, select the virtual machine that you created Solaris 10, and click the button as shown below.

2. Start Menu

Once you start the virtual machine, you will see the Grub menu and the VM will start booting from Solaris, as shown below.

After the Solaris boot process starts, you will see the following message appear on your screen and display the release version of SunOS.

3. ZFS's root file system

Here you will be asked to choose the options available, depending on what you want to do. Therefore, select the following option 4, as shown in the image to begin installing the ZFS root file system.

4. Keyboard configuration

Use the arrow keys to select your keyboard layout from multiple available options, as shown in the slice.

Select your language from the 0-10 option by selecting the key and press ENTER to continue.

5. Solaris installation program

In this section, you will install through the Solaris Setup program and understand how it works. Press the F2 key to continue after reading.

6. Identification System

Press the F2 key to determine your system and network, set the default time zone and Time/date.

7. Network Connection

Select the "Yes" option to specify that your Solaris system is connected to the network and press "F2" to continue.

DHCP Network: Then select the "No" option to specify that you do not use DHCP for your network.

System hostname: Select the host name of your system on the network and press F2 to continue.
IP Address: Enter the IP address of the network interface.

Configure the subnet mask: Configure the appropriate subnet mask for your system as shown below.

Configure Ipv6: Selecting the option "No" for IPV6 has no effect on your system.
Default gateway: Set the default route after restart you can select the option, and then press F2 to move to the next step.

You have configured all the required network settings, and a summary of the options you have selected can be viewed in the snapshot phase. If you are sure the information is correct, then press the F2 key to move to the next option.

8. Security Policy

In this section, we configure the standard UNIX security policy, and if you want to use the Kerberose security option, you can select the "Yes" option and then press F2 to continue.

9. Domain Name Service

Select the option set for your Network name service, if you do not use any name service and then select the "None" option, and then press F2 to continue.

Next you will be asked to configure the NFSV4 domain, so select the first option to use the NFSV4 domain system.

10. Date and Time

Select the current time zone and the country or region you live in, select the current date and time for your system, and then press F2 to proceed to the next step.

11. Root Password

Set the root password for your system, if you do not want to set the password can be empty, press F2 to continue.

12. Remote Service

Select the "Yes" option to enable remote services, which will allow you to access the server remotely.

13. Configuration Manager Registration

Leave blank for no choice, press F2 to continue.

Set all options to blank, and then you see a notification message, as shown below.

Solaris Interactive Installation

. iSCSI Installation

Automatically eject CD/DVD: the CD/DVD disc will automatically eject when your system finishes installing.

Automatic restart: When this option is selected, the system restarts after the installation is completed automatically.

You may need to manually eject the CD/DVD or select a different boot device to reboot and avoid repeated installation.
Select media: Here you need to specify the media to install the Solaris operating system, so we want to select CD/DVD ROM.

License Agreement: Press F2 to accept the license agreement and select your location to install the operating system for the original locale.

16. Additional Products

If you want to add some additional products and then select the scan location, at this point we do not need to add any additional products so we want to select "None".

17. File System Type

Select the ZFS file system type to install Solaris.

18. Select Software

Select the second option all distributed software on your system, install Solaris and press "F2" key to enter the next option.

19. Select Disk

In this section, you need to select a disk to install the Saloris software.

. ZFS configuration

Now configure your ZFS root file system and press the F2 key to continue the installation.

21. Remote Mount File system

Press the F2 key to install the remote file system, which will help in any space issues.

22. Introduction

Let's review each option, you choose to configure the environment for Solaris installation, and if everything works, press F2 to start the installation.

. Solaris Initial Installation

Once installed, it will take some time to complete the installation.

24. Welcome to Node1

How does it look? Let's log in to the node using the account password you set.

Welcome to the Solaris Desktop

Welcome to Oracle Solaris's Java Desktop system, which is already installed and you can use it to test or configure your production environment.

Click Launch to browse the installed apps and features.
