Windows Authentication mode: When a user connects through a Microsoft Windows user account, SQL Server uses the information in the Windows operating system to verify the user name and password. This is the default authentication, which is more secure than mixed mode. Windows Authentication mode uses the Kerberos security protocol to provide a mandatory password policy with strong password complexity validation, provides account lockout support, and supports password expiration.

Mixed mode (SQL Server authentication and Windows Authentication): Allows users to connect using SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication. Users who connect through Windows users can use Windows authentication for trusted connections.

To select Mixed Mode authentication, you should set a strong password for all SQL login accounts, especially the system administrator SA.
