Internet Connection Sharing: ICS Introduction

What:

ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), Internet Connection Sharing. ICS allows multiple computers to share an Internet connection.

Scenario:

Let's take a look at its network topology:

5 (hub) connects three computers in the LAN, but only 4 (host) can connect to the Internet.

Ask:If there is only one Internet connection (3) and no routerClient Computer) What should I do if I want to access the Internet?

Answer:Use ICS

How:

Condition:The host must have two network adapters: a broadband connection (used to connect to the Internet) and a local connection (used to connect to the internal network ).

Steps:

1. Enable ICS for broadband connection

Open the network connection, click "Broadband connection", and select "share" in "attribute;

Tick the "allow other network users to connect to (N) through the Internet connection of this computer" option and select "Local Connection" under "Home Network Connection (H)".

Note: A dialog box is displayed, because this setting will automatically modify the "local connection" ip address.

Click "Yes (Y)".

After ICS is enabled, the local connection will get a new IP address and configuration -----> therefore, you need to re-establish a TCP/IP connection between the host and other network computers.

Click "Local Connection" and select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)". The IP address has been changed to 192.168.137.1 (DNS has not changed ).

2. Set the Client ComputerTCP/IP connection

Two methods:

(1) Dynamic IP Address -- automatically obtained

Open the network connection, just like above, click "automatically get IP Address", "automatically get DNS server address"

(2) static IP address --- manual setting

Principles:

I. The IP address must be in the same network segment as the host IP address, that is, any IP address between 192.168.137.2 and 192.168.137.254.

II. Set the gateway to 192.168.137.1.

III. the DNS server is the same as the host.

Note:This practiceThe IP address 192.168.137.1 can also be changed to another IP address, as long as the IP address of the host and the client is in the same network segment.
