Introduction to Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP)

Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) has similar functions as the routing protocol. Although it is not essentially a routing protocol, it can also manage unicast and multicast. So what are the specific meanings? Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) is a signaling protocol defined by IETF for the QoS integrated service model. It is used to reserve resources for the stream in the stream flow path, this satisfies the QoS requirements of the stream. The resource reservation process starts when the source node of the application stream sends the Path Message. The message is sent to the target node of the stream along the Path of the stream, and the Path status is established along the way; after receiving the Path Message, the target node will send the Resv message back to the source node and establish the reserved status along the way. If the source node successfully receives the expected Resv message, it is deemed that the resource is successfully reserved on the entire Path.

Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) is a signaling protocol carried by an ip address. It allows the terminal system or host on any end of the Router Network to establish a reserved bandwidth path between each other, schedules and guarantees qos for data transmission over the network. It plays an important role in businesses that need to ensure bandwidth and latency, such as voice transmission and video conferencing.

The RSVP protocol involves the concepts of the sender and receiver. These two concepts are logically differentiated. The sender refers to the process of sending the path message, and the receiver refers to the process of sending the reserved message, the same process can send these two messages at the same time, so they can be both senders and receivers.

RSVP is a resource reservation application made by the recipient. This application is unidirectional, that is, resources reserved for data streams from host a to host B, data Flow from host B to host a does not work. Because in the current internet, two-way routing is asymmetric: the path from host a to host B is not necessarily the opposite of the path from host B to host a; the other, the data transmission features in both directions and the resources reserved for the corresponding application may not be the same.

Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) provides two types of reservation:

Dedicated reservation (distinct reservation): the required reserved resources are only used by one sender. That is, different senders in the same session occupy different reserved resources.

Shared reservation: the required reserved resources are used by one or more senders. That is, multiple senders in the same session share the reserved resources.

Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) provides two options for senders:

Wildcard method (wildcard): By default, all senders are allowed, and the wildcard filter is restricted by the source address list carried in the reserved message.

Explicit mode: the filter explicitly specifies one or more senders for reservation.

Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) uses two service methods of the interserv model:

Cl service (controlled-load service): provides users with services that are similar to the quality of transmission over a non-overloaded network.

Gs service (guaranteed service): provides services that ensure bandwidth and latency for user data.

RSVP is suitable for providing reserved guarantees for frame-relay, hdlc, ppp, and other networks.
