AIX is a UNIX System developed by IBM. It is a dedicated operating System used on an IBM computer of the 6000 or later. It has been rated by the industry as the best commercial UNIX System for many times. AIX is short for Advanced Interactive EXecutive.

1. Development History of UNIX and AIX

The first UNIX operating system was developed in Bell Labs at the end of 1960s.

In 1980, the University of California, Berkeley, released their UNIX system.

IBM started to use UNIX systems from 1985

In 1986, IBM released the first version of AIX for the RT6150 computer.

In September 6000, IBM launched the New AIX Ver.3, a new version of the family

IBM released AIX Ver. 1994 in 4.1

AIX4.3 is a 64-bit operating system that can run 32-bit and 64-bit application software at the same time. It can run on any RS/6000 computer and is Binary compatible with the original version of AIX.

Currently, AIX uses version 5.1 or later.

2. Main Components of AIX

1) Kernel)

Between hardware devices and Shell), management of multi-process, multi-user, management of storage devices, control file access, most of the Kernel is written in C language, a small part is written in assembly.

The AIX file system has an inverted tree structure, which usually includes three types of files: common files, directories, and special files pointing to various peripherals connected to the system ).

22)/etc: System File

33)/dev: Various Device Files

44)/home: User Directories

55)/tmp: Temporary File

66)/usr: Execute the command

77)/var: log information

3) Shell)

Shell is the user interface of AIX. There are three types of Shell in AIX: Korn, Bourne, and C. It is true that the Korn Shell is used in the state of saving. Shell is also a command interpreter, Which is programmable and supports foreground or background running of applications.

4) Communications/Networking communication/Network)

AIX supports multiple network and communication protocols, including: bmp x channel, ESCON, HIPPI, ATM, ISDN, X.25, SDLC, FDDI, Token-Ring, Ethernet, 3270 Coax, 5250 Twinax, 5080/6090, and Async.

5) Text processing)

In the AIX system, the main text editor is VI, which is the most commonly used editor and a full-screen row editor. In the CDE environment, you can use another full-screen editor.

6) Programming Languages)

You can use Shell programming, and purchase advanced programming languages on the AIX platform, such as C, C ++, FORTRAN, and Pascal.

7) System management)

System Management of AIX includes software installation, user account definition, configuration of peripherals, disk space allocation, data backup, system performance monitoring, and system failure check.

8) On-line documentation online help) documentation)

There are multiple forms of online help documentation under AIX. Manual Pages is the most common method. You can find information about commands, subroutines subprograms, and files. In addition, you can use the infoExplorer AIX Ver. before 4.3) and Web-base methods for AIX Ver. 4.3 or later) to obtain information about books, tasks, and commands. Both tools include all the content of Manual Pages. They support graphic interfaces and have powerful search capabilities.

9) AIX Windows environmant Window environment)

There are two types of AIX Windows: AIXwindows and AIX Common Desktop Environment.

10) Other utilities functions)

Other AIX functions include: search tools, sorting tools, and tools for file conversion with the DOS system.

11) Wide range of supported applications other applications)

Includes other IBM or non-IBM applications.
