Enable compression
- RAID Group LUN and Thick LUN are automatically migrated to Thin LUN
- Thin LUN in-situ compression
When compression is disabled
- The original RAID Group LUN and Thick LUN are still Thin LUN and restored to the initial capacity.
- Original Thin LUN in-situ decompression
Improvements in the new version
Enable compression
- Thick LUN no longer needs to migrate data, but is converted to Thin LUN in situ and then compressed
- RAID Group LUNs still need to be automatically migrated but are compressed as Thin LUNs
When compression is disabled
- The original RAID Group LUN and Thick LUN are changed to the new Thick LUN and restored to the initial capacity.
- The original Thin LUN will not be decompressed in situ, but will become a new uncompressed Thin LUN.
Thick LUN: When compression is enabled, Thick LUN is converted to Thin LUN in situ and then compressed. When compression is disabled, it is converted back to Thick LUN and decompressed.
RAID Group LUN: When compression is enabled, data is migrated to the Thin Pool in the form of Thin LUN and then compressed. When compression is disabled, it is converted to Thick LUN and then restored to the initial capacity.
Thin LUN: When compression is enabled, there is no need to convert the LUN so it is immediately compressed in situ. When compression is disabled, Thin LUN data is migrated to a new Thin LUN and decompressed.
Benefits after improvement
- In-situ compression of Thick LUN saves capacity, because internal data migration will generate two copies of data in a short period of time, thus occupying more capacity.
- Decompress to generate a new re-organized LUN (Thick LUN or Thin LUN), with higher performance
