A "default program" is a program that Windows uses automatically when you open a particular type of file, such as a song, movie, photo, or Web page. For example, you may have more than one photo editing program installed on your computer. You can select one of these to be the default program that starts the program whenever you open a photo.
• Open the default program in the following ways: Swipe from the right edge of the screen to the middle, click "Search" (if you use the mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down, click Search), enter "default program" in the Search box, and click or click "Apply" and "default program" in turn.
Set the default program
Use this option to select a program that you want Windows to use as the default program. Your choice applies only to your user account and does not affect other user accounts on this computer. To set the default program
1. Open the default program in the following ways: Swipe from the right edge of the screen to the middle, click "Search" (if you use the mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down, click Search), enter "default program" in the Search box, and click or click "Apply" and "default program" in turn.
2. Click or click "Set Default Program".
3. Under "Programs," click or click the program you want.
4. Click or click "Set this program as default", and then click or click OK.
If you want to select the file types and protocols that the program uses by default, click or click Select Default for this program.
Attention
• If a program does not appear in the list, you can make the program the default program by associating a file type or protocol with it.
Associating a file type or protocol with a program
Use this option to fine-tune the default program based on the file type or protocol. For example, you can use a program to open all. jpg image files and use another program to open a. bmp image file.
To associate a file type or protocol with a program
1. Open the default program in the following ways: Swipe from the right edge of the screen to the middle, click "Search" (if you use the mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down, click Search), enter "default program" in the Search box, and click or click "Apply" and "default program" in turn.
2. Click or click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program."
3. Click or click on the file type or protocol, and then click or click "Change Program".
4. Click or click the program you want to use as the default program for the file type or protocol, and then click or click OK.
To see other programs (if available), click or click More Options. If you don't see the program you want to use, you can click or click Find application in the application store at the bottom of the list of programs or find other apps on this computer.
Attention
• Cannot change the association of a file type or protocol and leave it blank or disassociate. You must select a new program.
• The options set here apply only to your user account and will not affect other user accounts on this computer.
• Only e-mail programs that are installed on your computer can be used as default programs. This means that the Web-based e-mail service cannot be used as the default e-mail program.
