Symptoms and causes of SSD freezing

I7 ● SSD choppy symptoms

A friend who recently bought a new SSD may be troubled by a problem, that is, the system stops responding or gets stuck for no reason. The specific situation can be shown as follows according to the SSD master:

1. Sandforce control: during normal computer operations, the system suddenly stops responding, the hard drive lights flash, and the mouse pointer turns into a circle, so nothing happens. This situation may continue for 1 ~ 2 minutes later.

2. Control C300: frequent and transient freezing. For example, during QQ chat, the typing process is obviously not continuous, and the intermittent pause of about s will not lock the operating system, which is not as serious as the SF control, but it also feels uncomfortable.

Both cases may occur on Intel and AMD platforms. On the Intel Platform, especially after Intel's new Intel Rapid Storage Technology 10. x driver is installed, or the WIN 7 SP1 Patch package is upgraded, it is more likely to appear.

This phenomenon is widely called SSD lagging. I have found some solutions to eliminate this fault. the download is available on the last page of this article. However, I know that this method may not always work. I just want to help some users. For more information, please go to the SSD area on the forum.

● SSD lagging Cause Analysis-LPM

Before solving the problem, you must first understand the key knowledge:

Link Power Management (LPM)

LPM is a function on the SATA interface physical layer. It divides the Host and Device links into three forms: Active, Partial, and Slumber, the purpose is to reduce the transmission speed of the physical layer bus, which can reduce power consumption. The request sent by the Host is called HIPM (Host-Initiated LPM, HIPM), and the request sent by the Device is called Device-Initiated LPM, DIPM)

The Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver supports the LPM feature to reduce the power consumption of high-speed and high-capacity Storage devices. Of course, the LPM feature requires SATA hard disks to support this feature. Starting from ICH6M, LPM is supported by default after the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver (formerly RST driver) is installed on the notebook platform. The desktop platform is supported from ICH9R (the Intel Matrix Storage Manager 7.5 and the updated driver need to be installed), but is not enabled by default.

Starting with the Intel Rapid Storage Technology 10.0 driver, LPM is enabled after the driver is installed by default (including all laptops and desktop platforms ).

Therefore, the issue of high-speed SSD freezing may be caused by the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver (some may be caused by incompatibility with the motherboard or setup problems ), since this technology is enabled to save energy, why is it stuck? What are SSD technologies currently supporting LPM?

● The main reasons for choppy personal conjecture are as follows:

1. The host sends commands for changing the HIPM format, but the SSD Device Standards are different and cannot be well supported, resulting in poor compatibility;
2. The host sends commands that change the HIPM format too frequently. As a result, the SSD device cannot be reflected in a timely manner, resulting in incompatibility and lagging;
3. When LPM is enabled, the SATA bus transmission delay increases, leading to high-speed SSD transmission blocking and freezing;
4. Choppy occurs due to a conflict between the DIPM inside the SSD and the HIPM requested by the host.

In any case, the current solution to Choppy is to completely disable LPM. Of course, this will increase the power consumption, but I believe it is better to charge a bit of electricity than freezing.

Which SSDS support LPM?

So how do I know if my SSD supports LPM technology?

SATA Protocol definition: IDENTIFY DEVICE
Word 76, Bit 9
If 1, Device supports receept of host initiated interface PM
Word 78, Bit 3
If 1, Device supports initiating interface PM
Word 79, Bit 3
If 1, Device initiating interface PM is enabled.

Let's take a look at the four ssds I currently have: (I used the green Intel toolbox I changed)

The first is the Crucial C300. My C300 supports both DIPM and HIPM, and no DIPM is enabled currently.

Later, I used another old SSD, namely, the Gskill Falcon. This SSD does not support HIPM and DIPM, And the DIPM is definitely not enabled, so it is not affected by LPM.

As a replacement for the C300, M4 naturally supports energy-saving technologies. The DIPM is not enabled here.

The following sandforce SSD is the OCZ Vertex LE 100G, which I have been tossing about (no models available). The figure shows that it supports energy-saving technologies and is not currently available.

As you can see, I have not enabled these SSDS even if most of them support DIPM, so I have not encountered any choppy situation. The reason why I have pasted so many images here is also for your reference. To detect the post-Paster images together, the most important thing is the users who encounter choppy videos. Please do this before using my solution, and then compare the images. Send the images to the Forum.

After analyzing this, I can only think of a solution to modify the registry and disable all commands in this area. We recommend that you back up your data because an error in the registry may cause a system crash. I am not responsible for this. Pai_^

Players who do not have a choppy problem do not need to modify it. Of course, players pursuing extreme performance can try to modify it (which may properly reduce the SATA total line latency ).

Registry Modification instructions and downloads

According to Intel, what we need to do is in the Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesiaStorParameters.
Change the value of LPM, LPM, DSTATE, and DIPM from 1 to 0 in the corresponding SSD Port "x". If there is no Port, add it by yourself.

After modification, see:

How can I view the Port of the SSD to be modified? See:

My M4 g link is in Port 0, so I can change the LPM of Port 0 and other settings to work on the SSD of this Port.
