Java SE users are careful!
Is Java free? You think too much. Oracle's lawyers are on their way. Six years after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Oracle finally began to audit Java customers with great fanfare. More and more Oracle customers and partners (including partners ), claim that they have violated its license agreement!

Oracle starts tracing Java SE license fees

In 2010, with Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, it also had Java, but until now, its License Management Service Department (LMS) began to chase people for debt collection. This database giant has hired 20 employees worldwide this year. Their only job is to charge a company that violates their Java license agreement. In response, the industry's Compliance expert group is also expanding and hiring Java experts. More operations from LMS targeting Java are expected in 2017. This involves a large amount of money, and Java customers face thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars of payments.

The controversial Java version is Java SE, which has three paid branch versions. Each user pays $40 to $300, and each processor pays $5000 to $15000.

DataThe RegisterMessage: a customer with 80 thousand PCs in a retail industry has received a notification from Oracle, claiming that the customer has violated the Java protocol. Oracle also told another Java client that it owed $100,000-but the bill was cut down to $30 thousand. An unnamed expert said, "Oracle has identified this as a problem .". What's even more surprising is that, according to Craig Guarente, CEO and founder of Palisade Compliance, Oracle not only targets customers, but also partners.

"Oracle also targets its partners. This makes people angry, because they are always helping Oracle !" He told us. Partners want to know: "How can Oracle treat us like this ?!"

Java is open-source, but the Java SE installation package is not free.

The root cause of all this is that everyone's awareness of Java errors thinks that Java is "free! This idea can be traced back to the Sun era. Java in Sun is free and available in Oracle! However, Sun did charge license fees for IBM and Blu-ray player makers, although not for the vast majority of users. This is because Sun uses Java as the "cutting-edge of the wedge" to help it push its sales system.

Java SE is a general term and has many Download versions, including the Java SE Advanced Desktop launched by Oracle in February 2014 and the Java SE Advanced and Java SE Suite released in May 2011. Java SE is free of charge, but these versions are all paid. Java SE includes free JDK and JRE, but Advanced Desktop, Java SE Advanced, and Java SE Suite provide additional functions, for example, Java Mission Control and Flight Recorder (also called JRockit Mission Control AND JRockit Flight Recorder ).

In addition, Microsoft Windows Installer Enterprise JRE Installer is used for large-scale Java deployment. Java SE is free of charge when used in Oracle's so-called "general computing"-in terms of its license agreement, the devices involved include desktops, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. However, when the Oracle License Agreement is defined as "for professional embedded computers in Intelligent Systems", it is not free of charge. Later, Oracle further supplemented this definition, in addition to mobile phones, handheld devices, network switches, and Blu-ray players.

It sounds simple, isn't it? However, it is precisely on these general-purpose devices that customers are suffering from LMS attacks. The reason is that there is no way to separate the paid Java SE sub-products from the free Java SE package during the download, because Oracle does not provide separate installation software. When you only want to use some of the functions, you can only become a designated user of the Java SE Suite, and then pay accordingly.

If you want to deploy Java SE on a large scale based on your app development, you need Microsoft Windows Installer Enterprise JRE Installer, which is not part of free Java SE.

Why Does Oracle collect the network now?

Why Does Oracle act now, six years after Sun's acquisition of Java ownership? It is widely believed that LMS has taken a long time to design audit methods and learn more about the Usage Status of the customer's Java, waiting for pig to become fat. LMS is now ready, and it will open a knife to Java SE users in 2017. "I expect Oracle will continue to pay more attention to this issue in 2017. All trends show that Oracle's LMS audit team is becoming more powerful, and they are trying to get a higher revenue than in previous years. I don't think Oracle will become gentle and kind in 2017 ." Said Guarente.

What do you do?

Experts now suggest that you be especially careful when downloading Java SE, while those who have already downloaded it should re-examine the method used and be prepared before LMS comes to the door. It is reported that the number of customers who have been contacted by LMS increased significantly in the second half of 2016, and they sought help from Java licensing.

"If you download Java, you get all the software. Make sure that you only install the authorized components and Remove unused components ." Experts warned. "If you already have a Java application, first determine the specific components you actually use, and how you use them. Then, before you find them in Oracle, verify if you have any usage problems."

As of now, Oracle's official response has not been seen yet.
