The midpoint (.) of a JavaScript regular expression is a special character that can match any character except for a single condition.

  • Four-byte UTF-16 characters
  • line break (\ n)
  • return character (\ r)
  • Row delimiter
  • Segment Separator

In order for the point (.) to match any character, ES2018 introduces the new modifier s. This pattern is called the dotall pattern, which literally means that dot (.) matches all characters.

Example

console.log(/mazey.happy/.test('mazey\nhappy')); // falseconsole.log(/mazey.happy/s.test('mazey\nhappy')); // true
