Garbage collection: Frees objects that are no longer referenced by any variables

Garbage collector: A program that specifically records the number of references to an object and reclaims objects that are no longer referenced.
Garbage collector and main program are executed in the background in parallel

The garbage collector creates a reference counter (counter) for each object
As long as one more variable refers to the object, counter will be +1
As long as a variable releases a reference to the object, counter will be 1.
When no more variables are referenced by the object (counter=0), the object is freed by the garbage collector .
