Article title: Kernel comparison: Web services on 2.4 and 2.6. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
Linux 2.6 kernel has made many improvements in supporting enterprise applications. This article provides the results of the IBM Linux Technology Center Web service testing, and compares the Linux 2.4 and 2.6 kernels from different perspectives. The highlights are the key enhancements, testing methodologies, and testing results of the 2.6 kernel. Final result: the 2.6 kernel provides Web page services much faster than 2.4, and the reliability is not bad at all.

The Linux Web service test conducted on the IBM Linux Technology Center (LTC) aims to discover Linux kernel defects. The test focuses on the workload related to the enterprise user environment where Web servers/Application servers are used in actual situations. It also focuses on improving the stability and scalability of the Linux kernel and) compatibility with Web servers/utility servers. The most important thing is not to identify the defects of Web servers and application servers.

Test overview
Two types of Web service testing

There are two types of servers available for Web services: Web servers and application servers. In this article, I will use the term "Web services" to uniformly represent them.

The Web server displays the webpage in a Web browser by processing HTTP-based requests.

An application server is a server in a broad sense. it exposes business logic to client applications through various protocols, including HTTP. Compared with Web servers, it provides more complex and powerful functions, such as session management, load balancing, message transmission, transaction management, and security. In a sense, application servers are supersets of Web servers.

We have selected some Web servers and Application servers for the Linux kernel test environment, including Apache, Jakarta-Tomcat, IBM WebSphere Application Server, and Jboss. Most of these are open-source projects and can be downloaded for free (refer to the reference material link
