<> Overview of LAN switches
LAN switches have evolved from a HUB-based LAN shared in the traditional sense to a broader space. Take Cisco's Catalyst 5000 Series LAN switch as an example. It includes an integrated switching hardware structure, 10-Mbps Ethernet that supports switching, and-Mbps Fast Ethernet, supports fast Ethernet, FDDI, exchange-type ring, and layer-3 switching processing. This type of switch can provide exchange access to workstations, servers, network segments, backbone networks, or other users in the LAN.
Cisco IOS software provides advanced network services for Catalyst platforms and network applications. Cisco IOS technology is optimized for switching and can be used for all Catalyst switches, including Fast Ether Channel Technology for bandwidth sets; optimized support for Cisco group management protocols for multi-point transfer and multimedia traffic performance, as well as a wide range of management features. Cisco IOS also supports VLAN configuration and management, IP address management, and secure network service access.
<> Introduction to the Catalyst 6000 series
The Catalyst 6000 family includes the Catalyst 6500 series and the Catalyst 6000 series, providing a series of new high-performance multi-layer switching solutions for campus networks. The Catalyst 6000 family is designed to meet the increasing requirements for gigabit scalability, high availability, and multi-layer switching in Backbone Network/distribution and server collection environments, Delivering superior scalability and cost effectiveness, supports a wide range of interface density, performance, and high availability options. By providing Application Intelligence, service quality mechanisms, and security, customers can use their networks more effectively to increase customer services (such as multi-point transmission and ERP applications) without sacrificing network performance. In combination with Cisco IOS's extensive network services, the Catalyst 6000 family provides powerful management, user mobility, security, high availability, and multimedia support for enterprise intranets.
Introduction to the Catalyst 5000 Series
In addition to the Catalyst 5000, Cisco's Catalyst 5000 series switches also include four models, including Catalyst 5002, Catalyst 5500, Catalyst 5505, and Catalyst 5509, all of which are Catalyst 5000 enhanced. The old device used in this project is a Catalyst 5509 switch. Taking the common Catalyst 5509 as an example, there are nine slots in the Catalyst 5509 rack. The first slot is used in the Supervisor Engine module, which provides layer-3 switching and remote network management, the module has dual-port and full-duplex Fast Ethernet interfaces. The maximum speed of 5000 Mbps can be used to connect other Catalyst, routers and servers. The second slot is used to plug in the backup Supervisor Engine module. The other seven slots can be used in combination to configure any Switching Module and Routing Switching Module RSM ). The Catalyst 5509 chassis is suitable for mounting to standard 19 inch racks. All system components can be operated on the same side of the chassis. One power supply must be configured for a complete system. For fault tolerance, you can select Dual Backup, Server Load balancer, and power supply that supports live plugging.
Basic Maintenance for the Catalyst 6000 series and Catalyst 5000 Series
The Catalyst 6000 series and Catalyst 5000 Series LAN switches are powerful, including many usage and maintenance commands. Below are several common commands and simple descriptions. For all maintenance commands, see the related manual provided with the hardware device.
1. Port Settings
Set port name
Set port name mod_num/port_num [name_string]
Set port priority
Set port level mod_num/port_num noramal | high
Set port Rate
Set port speed mod_num/port_num <10 | 100 | auto>
Set the port transfer type
Set port duplex mod_num/port_num full | half
Check port configuration status

2. network port sc0 settings
Set the logical port for physical connection in the VLAN
Sc0 set interface sc0 vlan_num [ip_address [netmask [broadcast]
3. VLAN settings
Defines the serial number, name, and type of a VLAN.
Set vlan vlan_num [name] [type] Check VLAN configuration status show vlan
4. Trunk Testing
Create a relay on a specific port
Set trunk mod_num/port_num [on | off | desirable | auto] [vlans]
Check the relay configuration status
Show trunk
5. spantree settings
Set in a vlan
Spantree set spantree enable [vlan]
Set the bridging forwarding latency in a vlan
Set spantree fwddelay delay [vlan]
Set the hello message sending interval in a vlan
Set spantree hello interval [vlan]
Sets the maximum duration of a vlan connection.
Set spantree maxage agingtime [vlan]
Set the bridge path cost for a port
Set spantree portcost mod_num/port_num cost
6. SNMP Protocol Configuration
Configure the SNMP domain string: set snmp community read-only | read-write-all community_string
Set a restricted address or domain: set snmp trap rcvr_address rcvr_community
Check the SNMP configuration status: show snmp
7. IP packet segmentation
Set the segment set IP fragmentation {enable | disable} of the ip package in the FDDI and Ethernet bridging}
8. messages about ICMP not arriving
Set ip unreachable {enable | disable}
9. ARP table settings
Create an arp table and set the refresh time of the table
Set arp {ip_addr hw_addr | agingtime}
10 Configuration of layer-3 Switch Module
Telnet ip_address to the layer-3 Switch module.
Rsm> enable
Rsm # show run displays the current configuration file
Rsm # show int vlan id Display vlan status
Rsm # show ip route display route information
Layer-3 Switch vlan configuration:
