Linux 4.9 will be the next LTS version
Greg Kroah-Harman, the Linux stable version kernel maintainer, announced that the next long-term support version (LTS) kernel will be Linux 4.9. The latest version of the kernel is 4.7. On Sunday, 4.8 RC1 was released. Each version of the kernel will release the official version after 7 to 8 RC releases, the entire development and release cycle is about one and a half months to two months. Linux 4.9 will be released three to four months later, that is, from the end of November to the beginning of December.
LTS is usually a new version selected by kernel developers when another LTS version ends support. It will provide two years of updates. Linux 3.18 LTS will be supported by the end of January 2017, And the LTS version before 4.9 is Linux 4.1.
