Article title: Linux is more secure and flexible, but it is not perfect. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
Dennis Walters is a member of the Linux User Group at South Indiana University. he prefers to compare computers to cars and needs a steering wheel, door, brake gate, and seat. The most important thing is that the engine needs to be activated. Linux is the engine that powers Walters computers.

Linux is an open-source computer operating system, and more computer users are using Linux. Linux is very popular in enterprises, agencies, and large organizations. According to Walters, individual Linux users are also growing.

   Stable benefits

Of course, there are many other operating systems, such as Microsoft's Windows, UNIX, and Apple. But unlike these operating systems, Linux is an open-source system, which is a real free software that anyone can use.

In addition, Linux has other advantages. "It is much more stable than Windows," Walters said ." In the past two years, he had to reboot or restart Linux because of a problem. When using Windows, the system restarts twice a day on average.

Linux is also very easy to configure. If you like the Windows style, you can configure it to look more like Windows; if you prefer the Apple OS, you can configure it as Apple. Walters says, you can make it look like what you want it to look like.

"Open source" means anyone can access the source code of Linux. In this way, you can quickly respond to operating system problems on your computer. Walters says viruses and worms rarely harass Linux systems.

Now Linux is almost 11 years old. It was initially created by Linus Torvalds, a student from Finland, from UNIX systems, but is smaller than UNIX and requires fewer devices.

Linux is very easy to change, so now hundreds of companies have developed their own Linux versions.

   The number is increasing.

Although the number of computer users using Linux is small, this number has been growing rapidly. Walters said: "In the past two or three years, it was not quite mature. but in the past two or three years, I think it has grown into a strong system ."

Walters said the support provided by some big technology companies, including IBM and Hewlett-Packard, has greatly helped the development of Linux. In addition, Torvalds, the Open Source Development lab (OSDL), has been persistently developing and upgrading the operating system and its supporting programs. In addition, the open-source attributes of Linux allow users to contribute to the improvement of the system and share them with other users. Users help each other, and the number of users is increasing, so products are improved.

Of course, Linux also has some disadvantages.

Walters said: "The transfer to Linux has a knowledge curve, but this is the same as switching from Windows to Mac ." In fact, Walters replied to a joke: your grandmother won't use Linux because her grandmother uses Linux.

A bigger disadvantage is the lack of commercial software support. This means that many popular games and applications are not available. Although applications such as Open Office in Linux can compete with Microsoft Office, they are not powerful enough.

   Far from perfection

Another problem, Walter said, is the lack of hardware drivers. The driver is used to connect software and hardware. However, slowly gained some drivers.

He said that if an enterprise wants to use Linux as its operating system, it will usually hire employees familiar with the system. If you want to learn Linux, you can join the USI Linux User Group. Walters is part of this group. Currently, this user group has about 15 active members.

Of course, you still need software, drivers, and other ancillary products to build a good computer system, just as a good car needs wheels, dashboards, and transmission lines. However, Walters warned that Linux provides a very good and cheap engine to support your computer.
