Linux under a lot of compression tools, commonly used formats are tar.gz, tar.bz2, zip, etc.

A simple comparison:

TAR-ZCVF etc.tar.gz/etc
tar-jcvf etc.tar.bz2/etc
zip-ry etc.zip/etc

Note that the zip command adds two options

-R represents a recursive directory, or it only presses out an empty directory

-y means to keep the symbolic link without having to press the file that the symbolic link points to.

Compare the results:

[Root@centos6-244-desktop tmp]# ll-h
total dosage 25M
-rw-r--r--. 1 root 7.1M October one 11:13 etc.tar.bz2-rw-r--r--
. 1 root 8.2M October 11:13 etc.tar.gz
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 8.8M October 11:13 etc.zip

You can see:

compression rate bzip2 > gzip > Zip

Zip is a good commonality, and now Windows software Winrar,7zip and so on tar.gz support is very good. Recommended use of TAR.GZ,BZIP2 to consume more CPU
