February 11, 2016, the Linux Foundation and Industry Partners announced the new project: Fd.io. This new project is dedicated to building open source technologies for next-generation data centers and service providers, creating an IO service framework for network and storage applications. Io is an emerging part of the ecosystem "software-defined everything". For storage such as SDN, NFV, and software-defined, IO is designed to abstract data processing from the underlying infrastructure, making applications more portable and flexible. If IO can be implemented perfectly, it will provide significant performance benefits.

The purpose of Fd.io is to provide source code that facilitates the implementation of high-performance IO services, especially in the network and storage areas. The project has released its first software platform and promised to release more code in the future. In addition, the project created a verification testing center called "Continuous performance Lab". Interestingly, the Fd.io software seemed to be ready for business from the start, highlighting the eagerness of the Linux Foundation and its partners to IO production solutions. While IO is an emerging area, the Linux Foundation believes it will soon become an important part of a modern data center.

Project members include Red Hat, 6WIND, Brocade, Cavium, Cisco, Comcast, Ericsson, Huawei, Inocybe Technologies, Intel and other well-known manufacturers.
