Integrating Linux and Windows servers may not be easy, but it is indeed the best solution for enterprises.

Most IT enterprises cannot compete between Windows and Linux operating systems. However, because the economic situation seems to be deteriorating, the costs related to operating the two operating systems have also begun to attract the attention of managers.

Therefore, the competition for the Windows and Linux operating systems becomes more acute, because fans of each operating system began to regard this issue as a major concern for survival: many enterprises must begin to consider using a standardized system to save costs. The core issue is that each operating system environment requires dedicated hardware, management tools, and related technical experts.

IT enterprises are expecting to have third-party system management tools to manage both Windows and Linux server environments. This can reduce the complexity of management software to some extent and help these enterprises use fewer people to run more systems.

However, the server integration method is more feasible. The only way to integrate Windows and Linux operating systems on the same Server is to use the Hyper-V hypervisor provided by Microsoft in Windows Server 2008. NOVELL, as a partner of Microsoft, also runs Linux OS SUSE on top of Windows Server 2008 as a client. This means that, as a client operating system, SUSE Linux can use the same hardware resources as Windows Server 2008.

Unfortunately, Microsoft has not reached a similar partnership with any other Linux vendors except NOVELL. In a short time, Microsoft cannot allow other Linux providers to run on Windows Server 2008 as client operating systems.

Therefore, if you want to reduce costs by integrating Linux and Windows servers, you must carefully consider NOVELL and Microsoft. In your enterprise, many may have special preferences for other Linux vendors. However, if you want to use the Linux and Windows operating systems in the most cost-effective way, cooperation products from Microsoft and NOVEL are also a good choice in special cases.

Perhaps the best way is to make the ITT enterprises save a lot of money without selecting a server. Of course, not all application software can achieve the perfect virtualization, so it is necessary to run the standalone version of Linux and Windows servers.

However, deploying virtual infrastructure on more than half of the servers running the application software may be a good choice. The potential cost saved by integrating Linux and Windows server environments on common hardware platforms is hard to offset the current difficult economic situation.

Even taking all possible factors into account, integrating Linux and Windows servers may not be an easy decision. Of course, it will not become the most popular choice. But it is always better than not.
