Overview What is a shell?

The shell acts as an interface between the user and the Linux system, allowing the user to enter commands that need to be executed to the operating system. This is much like the command prompt for Windows, but the strong is stronger. Linux is a highly modular system that allows you to choose from a variety of different shells to use.

Common shell

In the Linux system,/bin/sh is always the GNU toolset of Bash (the GNU Bourne-again SHell).

In most Linux distribution, the default shell program/bin/sh is actually a connection to the program/bin/bash.
