Sysstat is a handy tool with a multitude of system resource monitoring tools for monitoring system performance and usage. A significant portion of the tools we use on a daily basis are from the Sysstat Toolkit. It also provides a collection plan that uses CRON expressions to develop performance and activity data.

The following table is a tool that is included in the Sysstat package

    • iostat: Output CPU statistics and input/output (I/O) statistics for all I/O devices.
    • Mpstat: Detailed information about the CPU (individual output or packet output).
    • Pidstat: Statistics about running processes/tasks, CPU, memory, and so on.
    • SAR: Save and output different system resources (CPU, memory, IO, network, kernel ...) ) For more information.
    • SADC: System Activity Data Collector for collecting back-end data for SAR tools.
    • SA1: The system collects and stores binary data for SADC data files and works with SADC tools
    • SA2: Use with SAR tools to generate daily summary reports.
    • SADF: Used to format the output of the SAR tool in different data formats (CVS or XML).
    • Sysstat: The man help page of the Sysstat tool.
    • nfsiostat: I/O statistics for the NFS (Network File System).
    • Cifsiostat: Statistics for CIFS (Common Internet File System).

Recently (on June 17, 2014),sysstat 11.0.0(Stable version) has been released, and some interesting features have been added, as follows:

The Pidstat command adds new options: First, the "-r" option, which outputs priority information about policy and task scheduling. Then the "-g" option allows us to use the name search process and then list all matching threads.

The SAR, SADC, and SADF commands also bring some functional enhancements to the data file. You can only use "sadd" to name the data file in the past. Now with the- d option You can rename the data file with "sayyyymmdd", and the current data file does not have to be placed in the "var/log/sa" directory, we can use "Sa_dir" Variable to define a new directory, the variable will be applied with the SA1 and SA2 commands.
