The Linux machine doesn't have to clean the hard drive at all, which is why you haven't seen the Linux user defragment the hard drive. Linux file system is a much better file system than Windows FAT, FAT32, NTFS, they can not only set permissions on the file, the implementation of full protection, and can be "used more neatly", "the less the more fragmented"! You should put most of your files on Linux partitions, not Windows partitions, because it's much more reliable than Windows partitions.
Because most scientists, engineers are using Linux or some kind of commercial UNIX, almost all commercial scientific engineering programs, such as Matlab, Mathematica, AutoCAD, Candence, Synopsys, avant! ..... All are UNIX-first versions (including Linux), which are then considered for porting to Windows, or not even to Windows, because Windows machines generally do not have enough power to run such programs.
With the free command under Linux, you will find that your memory is almost always running out. That's because Linux uses most of the memory as a disk buffer. Linux has advanced disk buffering technology than Windows. Did you notice that you were finished writing the data to the hard drive? That's because Linux has a lot of disk buffers in memory, the data you write to the hard drive is written to the memory, and then Linux tells you "copy done," and when you immediately want to delete some of the data you just wrote, Linux simply removes the data from memory and reports "delete complete." After a certain interval of time, Linux to write data back to the hard disk, so that not only efficient, avoid multiple hard disk operation, but also reduce the file discontinuity, that is, reduce the "fragmentation." Windows, of course, also has disk buffering, but because it is inefficient in memory management, it does not dare to use a lot of memory as a disk buffer, because it does not have the ability to take back memory at any time.

IBM made the largest parallel computer has more than 8,000 processors, Windows can not be able to manage so many processors, it uses what operating system? The answer is Linux.

Linux, of course, is not everything. It also has the ability to do things, the computer can not do things. But what Linux can't do, Windows must not do. These are the things we need to explore and work on. Linux must be your good partner in the process of your exploration.
Shell:bash. I'm using Bash's VI command-line approach.
Editor: VIM, Emacs
Program development: GCC, make, LD, Scheme48, J2SDK, Perl, Python, TCL/TK ...
Thesis, Slide tool: LaTeX, context
Drawing tools: MetaPost. The language is so strong that I only use it. If you're unfamiliar with it, you can use Dia to draw pictures like flowcharts.
Image processing: ImageMagick. The Import program can screen capture, convert program can convert image format, display can show pictures and simple edit (zoom, change quality, transfer format, simple drawing, simple mirror). Usually that's what I need. If you want a more powerful image tool that can be used with Gimp, it's almost like Photoshop.
Automatic administration Tools: make. I can use make to compile programs, automatically compile documents, automatically update illustrations ... Fully automatic, and will not repeat the work.
Package, compress the program. Everything is: tar, gzip, bzip2, zip, rar, ...
Virtual CD-ROM program. Linux does not need virtual CD-ROM program, directly mount on the line.
FTP server: PROFTPD, VSFTPD
WWW server: Apache. (I don't usually open it)
FTP client: lftp
Automatic Download tool: wget
Virtual terminals: RXVT, Xterm, gnome-terminal, Mlterm, ...
X Server:xfree86
Window Manager: FVWM. Compiled to join the Libstroke.
Chinese input: Xsim. I have been modified to meet the needs of FVWM. Also recommended you can use SCIM.
Email processing: Mutt + Postfix + fetchmail
See PDFs, PS, DjVu files: Acrobat Reader, Xpdf, Ghostscript, GV, DjVu Toolkit and Netscape Plug-ins.
Look at the CAJ document. I never look at documents like CAJ, if I can't find a PDF or PS, go directly to the library to borrow the best.
Look at the Web: Mozilla, Phoenix, Lynx. The mozilla-xft display effect is much better than IE.
English-Chinese Dictionary: IBM Smart Dictionary, star translation King.
Edit Web page: I write HTML directly with VIM. If you want graphics, you can use other things like Screem, bluefish.
Log on to other UNIX, Linux machines: OpenSSH, Telnet. OpenSSH can also upload the X program of other machines through the SSH-encrypted tunnel to my machine for display.
Video: MPlayer, RealPlayer. MPlayer too good, directly can put VCD, DVD, DivX, WMA, WMV .... RM is best to use RealPlayer, it is also free.
Play Music: Xmms
