BMW, Chevrolet, Honda, Mercedes and Tesla have one thing in common: their cars are running Linux. The car became a software platform, and the platform runs Linux, and its main competitor, BlackBerry QNX and Microsoft's IoT Connected vehicles, are losing territory.
The Linux Foundation has built Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) with Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Mercedes, Suzuki, and Toyota, the largest car company, to create a Linux based car solution. Tesla uses its own Ubuntu based program, which recently released 8.1 updates (17.24.30), upgrading the Linux kernel version from the old 2.6.36 to 4.4.35.
AGL is not the only working group that integrates Linux into cars, including Ford, Toyota, Mazda and Suzuki, to build a Smartdevicelink (SDL) alliance that integrates smartphones and cars seamlessly with Linux open source solutions. Google has developed Android Auto. The taxi software company Lyft widely uses Ubuntu, which includes the use of Ubuntu in self-driving cars.
