With the development and evolution of mobile network communication systems, 3G mobile communication systems are no longer a distant dream. As China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom increase their 3G network construction scale, a new term comes to our eyes, namely LTE. This article will focus on the differences between the 3G network architecture and the LTE network architecture, and explore the LTE-oriented transmission network solution on this basis.

Evolution from 2G/3G to LTE

The evolution from 2G/3G to LTE has gone through the following phases.

2G/3G phase: voice services are the main source of revenue. Broadband and grouped domain networks are constantly introducing new value-added services, and broadband business revenues are on the rise.

IP-based service phase: both the fixed network and mobile network use intelligent networks and deployment of softswitch to transform and upgrade the circuit domain network to IP bearer.

Integration of fixed services and mobile services: the bandwidth and speed of fixed and mobile users will be greatly improved, and the construction of fixed and mobile business networks can be integrated in many aspects.

Value-added services: IMS is introduced at the business layer to provide value-added services for fixed and mobile broadband users. The deployment of Femto (Home Base Station) is to achieve terminal convergence.

Integrated business operation phase: As IMS continues to expand, the network evolved into an IP-based broadband full-group network that provides services that integrate voice, data, video, and streaming media.

LTE phase: the fixed network is evolving towards triple play. The wireless part of the mobile network is fully deployed with LTE, and the core part is evolved to the EPC network.

3G network architecture and LTE network architecture comparison

Network Architecture Change 1 is shown in the evolution from 2G/3G to LTE.

NodeB: consists of the control subsystem, transmission subsystem, RF subsystem, Intermediate Frequency/baseband subsystem, and antenna feed subsystem. It is a 3G wireless communication base station;

RNC: Radio Network Controller (Wireless Network Controller), used to provide NodeB mobility management, call processing, Link Management and switching mechanisms, namely, 3G Base Station Controller;

Iub: the Iub interface is the logical interface between RNC and Node B. It transfers user data, processes user data and signaling between RNC and Node B;

CS: Circuit Switch (Circuit Switch), which belongs to the Circuit field and is used for the TDM speech service;

PS: Packet Switch (group Switch), which belongs to the group domain and is used for IP data services;

MGW: Media GateWay, which provides bearer control and transmission resources;

MCS: Mobile Switching Center. MSC is one of the core network elements of a 2G communication system. It is the place where call conversion service and call control are provided between telephone and data systems. MSC converts all calls between mobile phones and PSTN and other mobile phones;
