1. Mount USB Drive

The first step, first insert a USB flash drive, open the terminal using the following command to see if the USB flash drive has been mount to the system, the Finder can also see the U disk.

$ diskutil list
    • 1

The system output resembles the following:

Star@star: volumes$ diskutil List/dev/disk0#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER0:guid_partition_scheme*160.0 GB Disk01:efi209.7 MB disk0s12:APPLE_HFS Macintosh HD 159.2 GB disk0s2 3:apple_boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3/dev/disk1 #: TYP E NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0:apple_partition_scheme *17.  3 MB Disk1 1:apple_partition_map 32.3 KB disk1s1 2:apple_hfs Flash Player 17.3 MB Disk1s2/dev/disk2

                          #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
                          0:fdisk_partition_scheme *15.  7 GB disk2 1:windows_fat_32 KINGSTON 15.7 GB disk2s1

As you can see, the above/dev/disk2 is the USB stick mount point (depending on your own).

2. Unlocking the USB flash drive

Next unmount this USB flash drive, use the following command:

$ diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2

So there is an already inserted but unmount of the U disk, at this time you can not see the Finder under the USB flash drive, but with the Diskutil List command is also visible.

3. Write system image to USB drive

Next, write the ISO file of the Linux installation you want to make to this USB flash drive, which can be completed using the following command:

$ dd if=/Users/xiao/Downloads/CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1511.iso of=/dev/disk2 bs=1m

BS indicates the Write block size, which can be set to 2m, but not too large.

4. Complete

This process takes approximately 5-10 minutes (which may take 1 hours) and will output a log similar to the following when finished.

648+0 records in648+0 records out679477248 bytes transferred in 447.883182 secs (1517086 bytes/sec)

This is done by a USB-enabled Linux installation USB drive.
