No matter whether you are a newbie or a veteran in your computer, you will always hear the word "safe mode" if you use Windows. Beginners often have Vague understandings about this concept. What is the security mode? Is the system "insecure" at ordinary times "? What can the security mode do?
What is security mode?
We all know that for the current Windows 2000/XP/2003 operating system, the stability of the system itself is no longer a problem, and a large number of drivers and applications are the culprit endangering system stability and reliability. The system may have been operating normally, but the system cannot be started after a Bug is upgraded or a new version of anti-virus software is installed. To solve such problems that may affect the normal operation of Windows, but are not the fault of Windows itself, Microsoft has prepared a security mode for us.
Log on to the system in "security mode". The desktop is very different from what you usually see, just like the mode when the system is just installed in Windows 98 without any drivers, the fact is that when Windows is running in safe mode, the system will only load the most basic services and drivers that can start the system. In this way, the operating system will run with the least number of drivers and services and use a general graphics card driver, working at a resolution of 640x480, only the keyboard, mouse, display, and local hard disk are supported, and the default system service is enabled. In safe mode, Windows does not load drivers for audio devices and other unnecessary peripherals, and Windows ignores all programs that run automatically as the system starts.
Tip: the universal graphics card driver in Windows XP/2003 can display 24-bit depth and 640x480 resolution in safe mode, but these settings cannot be modified.
How to enter Security Mode
Pressing the F8 key during startup is the most traditional and most common method: When we turn on the computer power and the hardware completes self-check, immediately press the F8 key on the keyboard, you will see the interface shown in 1. Many advanced startup options are listed here. This security mode can be divided into several types. In general, we can choose to enter the normal security mode. In addition to this most commonly used method, you can press and hold the Ctrl key when the computer is started, or you can start the system in "safe mode.
Tip: For details about the other several advanced startup options, refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article, KB 315222: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/ZH-CN.
In normal Windows mode, click Start/run, enter msconfig, and select the General tab in the window that appears, check "enable-load basic device drivers and services only" (2), click "application/OK", and restart, the system automatically enters "security mode ".
Use security mode to solve practical problems
Now you probably know the meaning of the security mode, but how to use it? Next let's use an instance to tell you!
Repair System Faults
Sometimes, if Windows is not stable or cannot be started properly, you can try "safe mode" to solve the problem. Restart the computer and switch to "safe mode" to start the computer. After the system is successfully started in "safe mode", restart the computer in normal mode, the system will automatically repair the registry and some system files that may be faulty in "safe mode", and some minor system errors will be fixed.
Resolves crashes caused by drivers or software
This problem may be encountered by many people. In this case, the only solution is to uninstall the new driver and restore the old version of the driver. But the problem is that Windows cannot be started, how to detach and restore it? If the driver you installed is used for some non-important devices (such as NICs, graphics cards, and sound cards), try to enter the safe mode for recovery.
As we have already said, in safe mode, the system will only load the most basic driver, so as long as the system can still enter safe mode, we can directly uninstall the driver, or Windows XP/2003 users can use the "Return driver" function to return the last correct Driver (3 ).
Correct display resolution
If we set an unacceptable resolution for the display in the display properties, for example, we set a 1600 × 1200 resolution for a 17-inch CRT display, because the display cannot be queried, we cannot change the resolution to a normal setting. It is true that Windows has a protection mechanism. When you set a resolution that is too high for the display to display, the resolution will be automatically restored to the previous resolution after 30 seconds, but sometimes for various reasons, this function may not take effect.
At this time, you can use the security mode, because in the security mode, the system will display 640x480 resolution desktop. Therefore, we can safely start the system to safe mode, set the correct resolution in the display attribute, and restart the system to normal mode.
Delete stubborn software or virus Trojans
In normal mode, some viruses and Trojans (or even normal software) may not be correctly deleted because they may be associated with some automatically loaded software. In this case, you can try the security mode. In security mode, most of these programs are not loaded by the operating system. Therefore, we can safely delete viruses and Trojans using antivirus/trojan software, you can also uninstall software in normal mode as needed.
Although today's malware and viruses are getting more and more tricky, some may not be cleared in security mode. However, deleting software or virus Trojans in security mode is a skill that beginners must master.
Disk fragmentation
After the system has been used for a long time, many fragments will appear in the hard disk. Excessive fragments will affect the system performance and waste valuable hard disk resources. Therefore, it is recommended that you regularly fragment the hard disk. In the process of fragment, it is best not to run other programs, but when Windows is started normally, the system will load some automatically started programs, which are not easy to close and often cause interference to the fragment program. In this case, we should restart the computer and enter the safe mode. The safe mode will not start any automatic Startup Program, which can ensure smooth disk fragmentation.
Through this article, we must have a basic understanding of the security model and its typical applications. However, there are many other functions of the security mode. I hope that beginners can think of the "security mode" when encountering specific computer problems. Many problems may be solved.
