Manual installation of Parallels Tools in text mode in Linux

1. Start the virtual machine.

2. When you see a message that indicates that X Server cannot start, use CTRL+OPTION+F1 (CTRL+ALT+F1) to switch to another Virtual Console and enter the login information.

3 Select "Install Parallels Tools" from the "virtual machines" menu to connect the Parallels Tools ISO image to the virtual machine.

Note: If the "Install Parallels Tools" option is grayed out, make sure that parallels tools can be installed in the virtual machine operating system.

The Prl-tools-lin.iso image file will be connected to the CD/DVD drive of the virtual machine.

4. In the virtual machine console, enter the following command to get root privileges:

Su

5. To check if Parallels Tools CD images are already mounted, please enter

Mount | grep iso9660

If the command does not return any values, proceed to the next step.

If the command returns a similar

/dev/cdrom on/media/cdrom type iso9660 (ro,exec,nosuid,nodev,uid=0) information,

Skip the next step and proceed to the next steps.

If the command returns a similar

/dev/cdrom on/media/cdrom type iso9660 (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,uid=0)

With the information for the NOEXEC option in parentheses, you need to unmount the image using the following command and proceed to the next step:

Umount/dev/cdrom

6. To mount the Parallels Tools installation disc image, enter the following command:

Mount-o Exec/dev/cdrom/media/cdrom

Note:/dev/cdrom is the CD/DVD drive of the virtual machine and/media/cdrom is the mount point of the device. In some Linux operating systems, the virtual CD/DVD drive may appear as/DEV/HDB and its mount point is/mnt/cdrom. Some Linux operating systems do not have CD/DVD drive mount points. In this case, the mount point directory should be created manually.

7. When the installation disc image is mounted, use the following command to change the current directory to the CD/DVD drive Directory

cd/media/cdrom/

8. In the CD/DVD drive directory, enter the following command to launch the Parallels Tools installer:

./install

Note: You must have root privileges to run this command.

9. Complete the installation as prompted by Parallels Tools Setup.

10. After the Parallels Tools installation is complete, restart the virtual machine.

Note: When installing PD tools, if you are missing the following build, you can set up a local Yum source, install the missing package through the Yum source, and then perform the PD installer installation again.
