Five integrated server roles for Exchange 2007:
Mailbox server Role
An extended storage role that requires an I/O throughput of 70% less than Exchange Server 2003 and includes built-in support for continuous replication for high availability and e-mail retention policies.
Client Access server role
A middle-tier role that is published to the Internet; it provides new Outlook Web Access, Outlook move synchronization, Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP), Internet Mail Access Protocol version 4 REV1 (IMAP4) , Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), Outlook Calendar Web services, and other programmable Web services.
Unified Messaging server Role
You can connect Exchange to the middle-tier role of the telephony system, which provides universal inbox support for voice mail and Faxes, and supports Outlook Voice Access through speech recognition technology.
Edge Transport server Role
Gateways on the perimeter network, with built-in spam and virus filtering capabilities, support the Secure Messaging Alliance technology breakthrough.
Hub Transport server role
Routing mail across the enterprise, pre-licensing information management (IRM) messages, and enforcing compliance at each stage.
